DataOps

DataOps

Data nowadays is the principal asset of the a lot of companies, In today's world there's a bigbang of data sources(Internet Of Things sensors, new apps, social media, etc.). Douglas B. Laney author of "Infonomics" says "your information is an asset and you can turn It into a true competitive advantage"

But, What is DataOps?

"DataOps is about aligning the way you manage your data with the goals you have for that data." Brittany-Marie Swanson

We have to be aware that having an immense amount of information, without an integrated team that allows you to clean, transform and deliver it at the right time will leave us at a disadvantage and we will not be on the road to building a true data-driven organization.

Ashish Thusoo & Joydeep Sen Sarma in their book Creating a Data-Driven Enterprise with DataOps stated a data-driven organization should possess three things:

  • A culture in which everyone buys into the idea of using data to make business decisions
  • An organizational structure that supports a data-driven culture
  • Technology that supports a data-driven culture and makes data self-service

So, what´s next?

We have to realize that we have to become a customer-centric and data-driven company the effort should not only be concentrated in the technology department, but should also be a joint effort where all employees have access to information that allows them to make better and smarter decisions. These ideas can be used to optimize marketing, better distribution channels, maintain customer loyalty and others.

DataOps, or data operations, is founded on the concepts of Agile Development, DevOps and Lean Manufacturing following the DataOps Manifesto.

"DataOps defines a deconstructed, measurable, bidirectional, silo-spanning data-flow map of the journey from source to insight to action; establishes collaboration and goal alignment between data consumers and data managers; and builds upon a commitment to a corporate culture of experimentation and data service delivery".  Toph Whitmore

Conclusion

Companies need their employees to have the ability to understand how the business works and the desire to make a positive impact on the organization.

DataOps helps to connect everyone who handles data, including engineers, data scientists, analysts, and business users. DataOps it's not having the latest technology or a dream team best of the best It's about the data value chain, it's about democratizing data removing typical barriers of exclusive data, teams, and systems.
