A day in the life of a recruiter
As a specialist recruitment and headhunting professional, working for my own business, I have the huge responsibility of delivering results every time, because the minute the placements stop coming in, it can be catastrophic, and the wife becomes unhappy* (*jokes).
My day-to-day responsibilities can greatly vary but I thought you might like to find out what a day in the life of a recruitment consultant might look like:
1. Checking LinkedIn and emails: Checking and responding to urgent messages from clients or candidates is so important, and I always aim to respond within 24hrs. This isn't always possible as I spend a large proportion of my day responding to the huge numbers of enquiries coming in.
2. Candidate sourcing: After vacancies, finding the very best candidates is my bread and butter. I will search candidates late into the evening using various channels including social media platforms and job boards (for entry level roles).
Did you know? I don't bank candidates on an internal database. Although not as quick, it's very efficient knowing I've listened to my clients' requirements and will start a fresh search every single time.
3. Screening candidates: Once I've identified potential candidates I will screen them through phone interviews, video interviews, or in-person meetings to determine suitability for the job. I have incredibly high standards and won't just put bums on seats, so you'll only receive a call if you meet my clients exact criteria.
4. Client meetings: Although the lay of the land has changed since Covid-19, and face to face client meetings have become less frequent, Teams meetings have increased which means I get a better opportunity to understand their hiring needs and to provide updates on the recruitment progress.
5. Job postings: I rarely use job boards because although their purpose is to attract candidates, the best candidates aren't always there but when I do, I'll write and post job descriptions to help attract the best candidates.
6. Follow-up with candidates and clients: I'll follow-up with candidates to ensure they are still interested in the vacancies I have, and follow-up with clients to provide updates on the recruitment process.
7. Organise interviews: This includes setting up telephone calls, Teams meetings and face to face interviews. As part of this process, I'll send a professional meeting invitation to both candidate and client.
8. Negotiating job offers: It's highly likely that if I get you an interview, you'll be offered the job as I'll only set the best candidates up with the best clients. Once you have this offer, I negotiate the offer and terms of employment.

Did you know? "More than 60% of UK-based employees who accept a counter-offer end up leaving the organisation in question within six months" explains Helen Pedder of ClearSky Business, a specialist in supporting small and medium enterprises.
9. Administrative tasks: Loads of administration. You have to be organised when recruiting as I'll be managing multiple tasks in one day. This could include;
10. Social Media: With over 42,000 followers on LinkedIn (nearly a quarter are senior level contacts), it's important I'm proactive. This is done through and sharing important content such as market information, recent successes, industry polls and just general thoughts and opinions on current topics. I love interacting with you all on my posts so please keep getting involved.
11. CV Writing: Due to my workload it's impossible to re-write every candidates CV but those who I've worked with will know that I'll always help to ensure your CV is as powerful as possible, rewriting where necessary.
Did you know? Every CV I receive for a vacancy is proof read, formatted and transferred over to my template*. *unless, a CV is particularly fantastic then I'll leave it in it's rawest state.
12. E-cards: Send Happy Birthday and congratulations on your new role e-cards to those who've secured new positions (this includes candidates placed by other agencies, because at the end of the day job hunting is stressful and you deserve it). Have you ever received a conrats on your new role or birthday E-card?
FINAL THOUGHTS: I don't do this alone. My wife Janine is amazing and an absolute god send, as she's an expert candidate resourcer and finance whizz ensuring our business; Evolution Sales recruitment is always in tip top shape. Oh and she gives me a kick up the ass if I procrastinate, get side-tracked or take too much time out of the office.
Behind every great man, there's an even greater woman!
Overall, the work of a recruiter and headhunter can be fast-paced and varied, requiring good communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask effectively.
Until you've lived in the shoes of a recruiter you can never truly understand the trials and tribulations we face daily. It's a rollercoaster of emotion because one minute you're on top of the top filling vacancies, yet the next minute your candidate decides to stay in their current company, or they mess up in a dead cert interview.
Would I change it? Nope! I like to think I'm an awesome recruiter and I'll continue to work honestly, openly and ethically, taking into consideration both my client and candidates' feelings. Since starting Evo, I've truly become a much better person, which I think shows by providing a bespoke recruitment solution which works well.
