December 2024
This is our last newsletter of the year. We have lots of recent activities to share as well as some exciting things ahead for 2025!
The Morris Canal Greenway Working Group, which the NJTPA coordinates, met on Monday to discuss the latest developments in creating the 100+ mile trail that will span six counties. The group brings together representatives from municipalities, counties, state agencies and non-profits who are working to advance the greenway.
The Canal Society of New Jersey presented on the completion of the restoration of the Wharton Canal Walk Lock 2 East. The 16-year-long project raises and lowers the water level by 8 feet illustrating how the lock functioned 100 years ago, allowing boats traversing the canal to overcome elevation changes along the route. (For more project updates check out the blog post.)
Sascha Frimpong, the NJTPA's Director of Local Project Development, shared that Warren County recently received a $1.5-million Regional Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program grant to complete a portion of the greenway. The New Jersey Department of Transportation, in partnership with the NJTPA and the state's other two Metropolitan Planning Organizations, will begin accepting applications for Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside grants on December 10. Trails are just one of the eligible project types. The image at the top of this email was taken at the New Jersey League of Municipalities annual conference. Jeff Perlman, Senior Director of Planning, and Blythe Eaman, Director of Environmental & Sustainability Planning, were among staff on hand to promote the agency's various programs open to municipalities. (More on those here). We also used the conference to test out a survey we're fine-tuning that we'll use to gather public input for our next Long Range Transportation Plan.
The federal government requires us to update our long-range plan every four years in order for our region to remain eligible for federal transportation funding. The plan sets a vision for the future of our region's transportation system over the next 25 years and prioritizes projects. It's critical that we hear from residents to ensure this vision meets their needs.
We're calling the plan update Connecting Communities because transportation connects us to everything. It helps us get from where we live to where we need to go, whether we're walking, biking, driving or riding public transportation. We'll be rolling out a survey after the holidays and there will be many other opportunities for the public to get involved. For more information, visit njtpa.org/connecting.
