The desire (part 1)
Hello friends,
In this last chapter, we are rounding our first series on « What it takes to make it ». in our next series which will be in french, we will go deeper into our careers and making the most of industry standards applied to our lives.
In the first part of this chapter, we will be discussing what desire is all about and its primary basic benefits.
What is desire?
Desire is what turns dreams into reality. The little extra heat turns water into vapor. At 99o C, the water is hot enough for a cup of tea; add just one more degree to it and this hot water will be able to propel a locomotive or a boat. Desire is the little extra making tiny differences, and the sum of all these tiny differences make up the big difference. A burning desire enables you to achieve all you really want. Desire is what led Pitt GRAY, a former American professional Baseball league player. When he was young, he had only one single desire: he wanted to play in the major league. He constantly repeated that he would reach to the top. His greatest ambition was to play a match in the Yankee Stadium. In 1945, he signed up with the Brown of St Louis team. He played for one year only with the seniors. He was not a regular player; he did not kick any major kick during the entire season. Yet, Pitt is an immortal in the memories of baseball, who deserves his place among the greatest, because he could reach the top though he had no right arm. Pitt GRAY did not stop at what he did not have; he went on with what he had.
It is important to understand that desire is what helps a human being to maximize their capacities and to apply them to what they want. Desire forces an individual to give in all they have. It allows us to move forward at full speed with no hesitation. It seems like, we must always give in our best whether it touches going to work, passing an exam or doing physical exercise. We must give in our best shot! In reality, our thirst of victory is more important than our ability to win. In fact, the way someone wins partly reveals their character, but the way they lose, totally reveals them. The desire to win helps people win, while in theory, they were neither able nor meant to win. The truth is, whenever we give in our best effort, we end up winning despite the result we get, because the satisfaction that a total committed effort provides us with, turns us into winners. This is of paramount important, for you are in competition with yourself and, there is nothing more interesting and important than to know that you have given your best, that you have been able to pull out of yourself a special effort. A total effort awards you with a special victory, victory on yourself.
It is also important to note that, desire is what makes the difference between the average performance and the champion’s. It is even of paramount importance. Henry FORD knew that very well. He did not get any financial success before age forty and he was not very much educated. His desire and conviction that all things were possible propelled him to the top. For instance, when he wanted the V8 car engine type, he told his engineers: I want you to build a V8. these men and women, brilliant as they were having studied mathematics, physics and engineering, knew what could be done or not. They looked at FORD with condescension and patiently explained to him that the V8 type was an impossibility. They even explained to him why it would not be profitable to the company. However, FORD insisted; Gentlemen, I want a V8, build it!
Therefore, they went about it, with no enthusiasm and came back soon enough saying, now, we convinced that building a V8 car engine is impossible! However, no one could so easily dissuade FORD, who simply replied to him or her, saying Gentlemen; I want a V8, so get back to work. I want a V8 and I am going to have it. This time, the engineers worked much longer, invested more money, worked much harder and came back with the same conclusion: Sir, a V8 is a technical impossibility. The word impossible was part of FORD’s dictionary as he had already changed industry rules with chain manufacturing, model T and model A. FORD replied to them: Gentlemen, I want a V8 and you are going to build it even if it is impossible! So, get back to work. Today, history proves to us that FORD was right to insist.
FORD was more like the bumblebee, which cannot fly. The scientific proof is overwhelming. The bumblebee cannot fly; its body is too heavy and its wings to small. Aerodynamically, the bumblebee cannot fly. The bumblebee does not know that, and it is flying. FORD did not go for great studies, but he knew the power of the mind and knew that this one had no limits. Always remember that our mind will only have as limits, the ones we admit as though. That is why, every day, we see people who say they cannot and do not and some other people who say, yes, we can and who make it. In whatever situations, our desire to win is the only ingredient that turns all difficulties into opportunities.
