Diane Kubal: Helping Consultants Stay Ahead of Their Time

Diane Kubal: Helping Consultants Stay Ahead of Their Time

Welcome to the first of many articles featuring people who are ahead of their time on a variety of expertise areas.

According to Collins Dictionary, if someone is ahead of their time or before their time, they have new ideas a long time before other people start to think in the same way.

I recently interviewed Diane Kubal as an example of someone ahead of her time. In 2017, Diane realized consultants needed creative ways to generate revenue. At the same time, corporate clients need more impactful ways to provide learning that can result in an ROI. This began before the pandemic.

Diane Kubal continued to watch the ever-evolving corporate training landscape. Her business thrived on matching consultants with corporate needs for over two decades. But as change swept through the industry, Diane's creativity and adaptability propelled her to the forefront of a learning revolution.

The Shift in Corporate Learning

Lynn: Diane, what did you see changing in the corporate learning space?

Diane: "Corporate clients were facing a new challenge. They needed more effective, less time-consuming learning solutions. The old half-day, in-person training model was no longer cutting it.

Lynn: What other challenges were companies facing?

Diane: As travel budgets decreased and businesses sought efficiency, leaders demanded training in smaller, more digestible chunks. Then came the pandemic, accelerating the need for change.

Suddenly, all corporate learning had to go virtual. Attention spans became shorter, and distractions multiplied. It was a crisis and an opportunity.

Diane Wanted to Nurture Her Creator Side

Lynn: Diane, I suspect your journey as a creator began long before your professional life. When do you first remember tapping into your creative side?

Diane: As a young girl, I loved baking Bundt cakes. I enjoyed experimenting with different flavors and fillings, using any available ingredients. Today, I still love to cook and use whatever I have in the kitchen to make something delicious.  That same creative spirit drives me in the work I do now.

Lynn: I’m curious to learn more about how your innate creativity proved invaluable as consultants faced the challenges of the new learning landscape.

Empowering Consultants in a Changing World

Diane: As consultants struggled to adapt to virtual facilitation, I saw an opportunity to make a difference. I immersed myself in the world of blended online learning. It turned out to be much more engaging than I expected.

Lynn: How did you immerse yourself in blended online learning?

Diane: I took an online course on creating virtual experience-focused programs. After I completed that course, I had a breakthrough. I converted my content into a blended program and sold the pilot to a large company, which they loved! That's when I realized – I could help consultants do the same!"

The Blended Learning Revolution

Lynn: That breakthrough led you to move your business in a different direction. What are the key elements of a blended online learning program?

Diane: Here are a few examples of key methods I combine to create a high-impact experience:

  • Live in-person, virtual training or group coaching
  • Personalized written feedback from coaches or facilitators
  • Online peer communities
  • A variety of self-study content methods (i.e. videos, articles, worksheets, etc.)
  • Learning spread out over a week, a month, or longer
  • Use of engaging, experiential learning methods
  • Gamification and progress tracking
  • Built-in quizzes, surveys and measurement
  • A user-friendly learning platform that enables all of the above in one place

A blended online learning approach goes beyond efficiency-it's more effective. It demonstrates measurable value, a challenge that has plagued corporate training for years. -Diane Kubal

A New Business Model Emerges

Lynn: What opportunities did you notice as you helped consultants develop this new approach to learning?

Diane: I realized consultants needed help creating programs using this new learning model. Consultants also overlooked the possibility of seamlessly integrating real time one-to-one engagement with them.

That's where I come in.

I identified a fresh way to co-create high-impact digital programs incorporating access to the consultants’ expertise.  This approach increases the consultant's reach, impact, and profit.

The Future of Learning

Lynn: Diane, I can see your passion for this work by the way you describe the experience. What does the future look like from your perspective?

We're not just adapting to change; we're shaping the future of learning."-Diane Kubal
