Lesson #4: Seek Out The Champions..!

The Fourth Most Valuable Lesson I Learned Running a High-Growth Business: Seek Out The Champions from Your Network!

In the tumultuous journey of entrepreneurship, where every day brings its own set of challenges, having the right support network can make all the difference. Among the myriad lessons learned while navigating the high seas of business growth, one stands out above the rest: the importance of having and seeking out champions from your network.

Why is this so crucial? Because surrounding yourself with inspirational individuals is fundamental to maintaining the right frame of mind and the motivation to achieve your goals, especially in the early stages when obstacles seem more prevalent than victories. The presence of champions in your circle instils a sense of belief—belief that greatness and success are attainable because you witness firsthand others who have achieved them.

Negative influences can act as roadblocks on your path to success. Removing such individuals from your circle is essential, as they can hinder your progress and dampen your spirits. Instead, focus on cultivating relationships with positive-minded, successful, and inspirational people who uplift and motivate you.

One of the most influential figures in my network was my late father, a quintessential old-school businessman. He lived and breathed business, finding joy in every aspect of it, particularly the human interaction it entailed. His passion lay in taking something of modest value and transforming it into something significantly more valuable, all while turning a profit. His motivation stemmed from the sheer thrill of conducting business.

Growing up with a father like him meant that from a young age, around 7 or 8 years old, I found myself by his side, often assisting him in running shops on weekends. This immersive experience provided me with what I now consider to be the ultimate master class in business. Reflecting on my childhood, I am filled with fond memories of the quality time spent with him, absorbing his wisdom and witnessing his unparalleled ability to identify promising deals and business opportunities. Remarkably, he achieved all of this despite arriving in England with no formal education and without knowing a word of English. His determination to educate himself was his top priority.

Undoubtedly, my father was the most influential character in my life, shaping my decision to venture into the world of business myself. I owe much of my current success to his guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support. It's safe to say that without his inspirational presence, I wouldn't be where I am today.

Sean Zimdahl, you were my inaugural role model. I can still vividly recall our meeting back in 1997, where your charisma and confidence left an indelible impression on me. You instilled in me a belief in the possibilities achievable through hard work and exceptional skill. Perhaps it was your anecdote about acquiring your first 911 by placing 20 Sybase DBAs in Germany that truly resonated with me! As did the words "Its what we train for!" and just a simple "Come on!"

Throughout some of my most trying moments in business, you remained a steadfast source of guidance and support, never hesitating to offer assistance. This unwavering support is something I deeply cherish and will always remember. I consider myself privileged to count you among my friends.

Your accomplishments in business come as no surprise to me; you epitomise success and entrepreneurship in every sense.

Mark Clough, Peter Knivett, Paul Thompson, and Paul McIntyre of Opera Holdings formed an unparalleled recruitment powerhouse. Joining straight out of university thrust me into a world of old-school cold calling and scripted pitches. My interviews with Cloughy and Pete are etched vividly in my memory, setting the stage for what followed. Despite only spending 12 months there, the depth of experience felt more like three years.

Mark, your innate ability to inspire and motivate was second to none. Your words had a transformative impact on all who heard them. And PK, your blunt yet invaluable feedback—like, "That’s great Sat, but where’s the next one coming from?!"—was a harsh but necessary lesson for a rookie like me! It paved the way for accelerated growth and served as a poignant business lesson.

Tommo and Paul M, your names consistently gracing the top of the league tables served as beacons of inspiration for me. Achieving success in the Southern Region, following in your footsteps, was a monumental achievement. And let’s not overlook JB, the mastermind behind it all. His adeptness at curating such a talented team was a feat few could replicate.

Howard Butterfield of Plexus, you illuminated for me the significance of values and vision. Your execution of both was nothing short of brilliant, and witnessing it firsthand was truly inspiring. Under your guidance, I ascended to heights in the workplace that few have the opportunity to experience. It was a period of transformative moments and the fulfilment of numerous life goals. Looking back to July 1996, I'm immensely grateful that I chose you over Lorien. Your boundless enthusiasm remains etched in my memory to this day.

Warren Greshes, your material has been a staple in my life for close to two decades now, making it seem as though you've been a constant presence. It's almost like having a dedicated virtual motivator or trainer at my disposal. Meeting you in person at the office a few years ago was a highlight, and it underscored the timeless value of your content. What you shared remains as pertinent today as it was during the garment trading era in NYC back in the '80s. Your insight that "confidence is a by-product of action" continues to resonate and finds its way into my daily lexicon.

Each of these champions, in their own way, contributed to my growth as an entrepreneur and a leader. Their guidance, support, and inspiration propelled me forward, even in the face of adversity. As I continue on my entrepreneurial path, I am committed to acknowledging and honouring the contributions of these remarkable individuals who have helped shape my amazing life journey.

In conclusion, the fourth most valuable lesson I learned running a high-growth business is clear: the power of seeking out champions from your network cannot be overstated. Surround yourself with positive, inspirational individuals who believe in you, your vision and support your aspirations. Their influence will fuel your motivation, strengthen your resolve, and propel you toward success.
