The Dilemma; Work for Clients or for Me?
Why is it, that rather than doing work to better promote my business, I always end up putting the client first? Is it solely because client projects are the immediate revenue generators, I wonder? Obviously not, as the long term benefit of investing time in my own promotion will of course bear greater dividends in the long term. The complete web redesign I have been promising myself to do, that is in desperate need of a complete overhaul, has been delayed countless times. Always something more pressing to do, a tight deadline or perhaps something more momentarily enticing. Same for the promotional brochure I was going to complete by March. SO what is the problem, why the procrastination? Do other designers do this, or is this unique to me?
Well a complete redesign of my site will take far too much time - I hear my self persuasion. About a week to completely represent my work, update it and consider how to efficiently convey the multi-disciplined nature of the consultancy. All without making everything seem overwhelming and non superficial. How to best convey warmth and attentiveness combined with supreme professionalism. All wrapped in a modern package, yet not trendy as has been the path of so many design websites of the moment.
This last week has seen a personal revolution. Though probably as busy as I have ever been, with 4 separate organizations requiring branding concurrently, some involving website design, as well as printed collateral, vehicle wraps, sales literature and uniforms I have decided that enough is enough! With multiple 3 am finishes, lots of coffee and a big dose of 'can do', work has finally started. No, let's not get ahead of ourselves, while a complete change is very much required, a serious update has been generated. New work, better explained and hopefully a step in the right direction. At least in having to organize everything so when the epiphany of complete redesign does occur, the foundation with regards to preparation has been done.
This should last another 6 months............or at least that is what I am telling myself! www.midesign.org you will be redesigned, as soon as I am a little less busy.

8yHI Marco It must be great to be so busy, as it is said "If it works do not fix it" with out clients one would not have a business, Commission work is hard and sometimes time consuming and one does need a break, I have just finished a 12 week break and have found it a wee bit difficult to get into the swing of things again, but I think I see things more clearly now. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.
