The Direct View: October 2024 Edition (The Americas)
Get Ready for the Holidays with Scalable Imaging Solutions
Although it’s only the end of October, the holiday spirit is already beginning to take hold. Houses of worship, in particular, are coming up with creative ideas for their annual productions and may need your expertise. Now is the perfect time to reach out to your current HOW clients to explore any updates to their AV systems that could enhance the quality and enjoyment of their productions—without overburdening their staff or budget. Scaling video equipment for a holiday production requires a careful balance between performance and practicality.
Here are a few pointers to help you and your HOW customers find the ideal middle ground:
1. Identify the Scope: Seasonal or Permanent?
Will the video system be used solely for the holidays or year-round? If it’s the latter, propose the flexibility and versatility of a projection system. During the holidays, this multipurpose option can project bright, vivid images of the choir onto a large standalone screen; throughout the year, it can display announcements on a smaller screen positioned above the altar. The projector’s position, lens, and screens can be adjusted to suit any occasion. For a singular holiday production, a temporary setup may be easier for HOW’s largely volunteer staff to manage.
2. Determine the Scale: Small and Simple or Large and Complex?
Will the video display be the centerpiece of the stage or a backdrop to complement a live performance with static images? Will performers stand in front of the screen? Where will the audience be seated? Will the production require one large screen or multiple displays? Answers to these questions, along with a clearly defined budget and timeframe, will help you gauge the best imaging technology (projection or LED display), the number of displays and/or projectors required, the size and composition of the imaging surface, and other details.
3. Consider the ROI: Rent or Own?
A quality projection system or LED video wall will undoubtedly brighten holiday production, but for some HOWs, renting the equipment may be a better option. Plus, by allowing your customers to try before they buy you relieve the stress of executing a system on a short timeframe and increase your chances of a sale later on.

Celebrate Color!
For years, our industry has concentrated on projector brightness, pushing for higher lumen output with every advancement. Now that this feature is firmly established across our projector line, we’ve shifted our focus to the quality and accuracy of color—after all, it’s what first captures your customers' attention. When colors are vivid and true-to-life, the entire viewing experience is enhanced. To emphasize this point, we’ve launched a new campaign spotlighting the integration of Texas Instruments’ 0.8” HEP DMD in our groundbreaking E-Vision 16000i single-chip DLP projector. This industry-first projector achieves stunning color reproduction, especially in challenging red tones, surpassing REC709 and positioning it among the most color-accurate projectors available.

Case Study: Projection Mapping Public Spaces with Color and Light
Specialists in large-scale digital art productions, WAVEFORM.exp turns to Digital Projection for a massive projection mapping project in downtown Denver.
The Denver Civic Center Conservancy commissioned the illusionary specialists WAVEFORM.exp to create this mesmerizing spectacle. In turn, the WAVEFORM.exp team relied on the imaging expertise of Digital Projection and the precise color rendering and high brightness of its technology to bring the specially designed scenes to life. "Since its inception in 2020, our mission has been to merge art and technology in public spaces, transforming everyday structures into something magical and memorable, even if only for a moment," says WAVEFORM.exp co-founder Sam Moritz. “We have found that imaging solutions from Digital Projection excel at accurately portraying the digital artform we create for these high-profile, public venues.”
An All-American Tribute to Art and Technology
One of WAVEFORM.exp’s first projects for the Civic Center took place just before the Fourth of July. The task: Create an exciting, loosely themed Independence Day narrative projected onto the elegant exterior archways and columns of the Civic Center’s iconic Greek Theatre. This city-sponsored event was open to the public and held in an outdoor space stretching 12 acres, allowing thousands of people to gather comfortably and watch as the scenery around them shifted seamlessly from one vibrant, colorful projected image to the next. Three Digital Projection M-Vision 23000 projectors were utilized to maintain the brightness and depth of the three-dimensional visual effects spanning 188 feet wide and 35 feet tall across the surface of the iconic amphitheater.
For optimal results and a fast, temporary installation, WAVEFORM.exp conducted all essential projection mapping calculations in advance over the course of two months, using equipment specifications provided by Digital Projection, which streamlined the installation process significantly. “When we arrived the night before the event to set up, the configuration, calibration, mapping, and precise positioning of the projectors all were complete in just four hours with little to no time to adjust the mapping during the night of show,” recounts WAVEFORM.exp co-founder Pat Higgins.
The event was such a success, and the partnership between Digital Projection and WAVEFORM.exp proved so effective, that they have since collaborated on several more projection mapping projects. “DP’s hands-on customer service not only helped us get up and running quickly but also positioned us for success with several cutting-edge experiential projects in the works,” says Moritz.
