Discernment: The Quiet Courage of Knowing When to Reveal Your Truth

Discernment: The Quiet Courage of Knowing When to Reveal Your Truth

Courage is often depicted as bold, loud, and undeniable. We imagine acts of heroism, dramatic decisions, and fearless leaders taking a stand. But everyday courage is often quieter, subtler, and more personal. It’s admitting you made a mistake. It’s owning your shortcomings. And sometimes, it’s choosing not to reveal your vulnerabilities—because discernment is just as courageous as confession.

Discernment asks us to balance transparency with prudence. It's not about hiding who we are or concealing the truth. It’s about recognizing the delicate dance of human relationships—knowing when to let someone in and when to protect your core from those who might not have your best interests at heart.

This is particularly relevant for those in high-stakes environments like the military, law enforcement, or first responders. These professionals operate in a world where trust and loyalty are essential but not always guaranteed. Imagine exposing your deepest vulnerability to someone who hasn’t earned your trust—someone who may see your moment of weakness as an opportunity to exploit or diminish you. The fallout can be not only personal but also professional, affecting team dynamics and mission outcomes.

The Courage to Choose Wisely

It takes courage to admit our mistakes, but it takes equal courage to determine who deserves to hear that admission. Vulnerability is a powerful tool for connection, but it’s not a universal currency. When we expose ourselves to the wrong audience, the consequences can be severe. Discernment is the practice of asking: Will this person use what I share to help me grow, or will they use it to hold me back?

Military personnel and first responders know this challenge all too well. Their lives and careers often depend on tight-knit teams and unspoken bonds of trust. To reveal vulnerability to someone who hasn’t “got your six” can feel like handing ammunition to the enemy. The stakes are high, and the consequences can ripple beyond the individual.

Yet discernment doesn’t mean closing yourself off completely. It means taking the time to evaluate trust. Who in your circle has consistently shown they’re in your corner? Who offers constructive feedback instead of judgment? And most importantly, who has demonstrated their own courage by admitting mistakes and taking ownership of their flaws?

Creating Environments of Trust

While discernment is a personal responsibility, there’s also a collective challenge: creating environments where it’s safe to be human. Leaders in any field—whether in corporate boardrooms or firehouses—have a unique opportunity to model courage and trustworthiness. When leaders admit their own missteps, it sets the tone for others to do the same. This isn’t weakness; it’s strength. It’s how we create cultures of mutual respect and shared resilience.

For organizations, building this culture requires intentional effort. It means recognizing and rewarding those who support their teammates through vulnerability, rather than exploiting it. It means offering spaces for honest, open dialogue. And it means calling out those who break the unspoken bonds of trust.

Everyday Courage in Action

Discernment is an act of everyday courage because it forces us to pause and reflect before acting. It asks us to weigh the potential risks against the potential rewards. It’s admitting when we’re wrong but ensuring that confession happens in the right context, with the right audience.

In our personal and professional lives, the courage of discernment is just as vital as the courage of action. So the next time you’re tempted to bare your soul—or bury it entirely—take a moment to consider your audience. Have they earned the right to hear your truth? Will they handle it with care? Because courage isn’t just about what you reveal—it’s about knowing when and to whom to reveal it.

And that’s the quiet strength of discernment.

My First Christmas Song of the Season May Be My Last

I wanted something I could dance to up on stage, or post to YouTube without running afoul of the copyright lawyers. So I came up with Sugar Plum, Barely. It's a sweet little ditty, full of holiday spirits. There's even a cat in it. What could possibly go wrong?
