The Discovery Call: What Is It and What To Expect
Recently I saw an interesting post on LinkedIn from the lovely Shabnam Rajah talking about "shady practices in the personal development world".
It was all about honesty, transparency, and building trust that some coaches or service providers using horrid tactics are destroying, giving us all a bad name in the process.
Jumping on a "discovery call" with a stranger from the internet is quite frankly, a very scary thing to do...
There are many things going through your head:
"Will they put pressure on me and ask for my credit cards details?"
"Will they ask me questions and corner me so I'll feel stupid if I don't say yes?"
"Are they going to pull some sort of jedi tricks on me: "You will buy my offer...""
Ok, maybe not that last one but the first two surely went through my own head before.
All the while trying to make up some get away excuses before going on the call ("My dog just broke his leg and got a hefty vet bill to pay!") to counter those attacks from the dark side...
I'm well aware of this, which is why a few weeks back I wrote a piece of content on my website for the people who had booked a discovery call with me. This piece of content is all about setting up expectations, so they could prepare for the call, feel comfortable, and be reassured that I'm certainly not going to pull any dirty tricks on them.
And maybe you've even sat there yourself, thinking the same things as I did, preventing you from reaching out to me!
So after that conversation on Shabnam's post, I thought "I need to make this public for everyone to read!", and so here it is. I've turned it into this blog post.
Coaching is very personal, and we need to ensure that my client and I can work together and that we “vibe”. For me, it’s about discovering my potential client and their challenges, understanding them to ensure that what I offer is a good fit.
For my client, it’s about discovering what I’m like, find out more about the programs, and get clarity on what their next step is. That might be working with me, or it might not.
I want to make sure they get the most out of the call and that they know exactly what to expect. This last point is important because I want them to feel safe and comfortable.
Let's dig into what is a discovery call, what to expect and what not, and what happens after!
WHAT TO DO TO PREPARE FOR THE CALL
I could try to write this all fancy Nancy again, but it will really be more real and authentic if I literally copy and paste the exact text my potential clients read! So here it is, the raw, unedited version of it:
"We will meet on Google meet, and you would have received your invite with the link to join in your appointment email confirmation. Make sure you have added it to your calendar, so you have the link handy!
A reminder email will be sent 2h prior to the call, because, well, life happens!
For the call, please ensure you are in a quiet and private space, for 2 main reasons:
1. It’s important that you don’t feel judged or pressured in any way. It's important that we can talk openly and candidly, that you can let emotions rise freely if they do. It’s your time, and it’s about you.
2. I will also likely lead you through a short practice to help you connect to your inner intuition so that you can uncover what the next best step is for you. This works best when you’re in a calm and quiet environment, free of distractions! I recommend bringing a pen and notebook also.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE CALL?
I review the notes on the booking form and any others correspondence we would have had prior to the call so that it gives us a starting point for our discussion.
I will ask you a few questions so I can understand exactly where you’re at and evaluate if my services are right for you.
They might not be. If I feel that what you need is a therapist for example, I will tell you.
I will explain what the programs are, how it works and will answer any questions you may have.
Then I will lead you through a heart coherence practice.
We have within us the knowledge to guide us. To know what to do. The issue is, when we are stressed, overwhelmed, anxious, our nervous system is shutting down our higher thinking functions, giving priority to our “emotional brain”.
In this state, it’s impossible to think straight, make plans and take the right decision.
With heart coherence, you put your body and mind in an optimum state of being. This will enable you to access your implicit intuition, your inner knowledge to help you find what’s the next step that you need to take.
After that, depending on what you will have discovered, I will explain what the next steps are, whether you have decided to work with me or not, or need to think about it.
The programs are an investment.
Both financially and personally, so it’s in both our interest that they work. I want the best results for my clients. So if I think what I offer is not for you, that you’re not ready or I feel we are not a good match, I would rather we don’t work together.
AND AFTER THE CALL?
Within a day I’ll send you a follow-up email.
This might include further resources for you to explore, and/or the details of the next steps as I would have described on the call.
I will leave you time to review, ask any further questions via email etc…then, depending on what we’ve agreed, I might follow up again in a week or two to see where you are.
And that’s it!
There are no dirty tricks, no pushy, horrible sales tactics.
I do have a limited amount of people I can work with on a monthly basis, so I will let you know what the situation is in regard to that.
As I said, these programs are an investment. One that will pay off for the rest of your life, for sure, but it’s not to be taken lightly. I want you to make the best decision for you."
Conclusion
So there you have it. The exact messaging people who book a discovery call with me get.
What I do is deep personal work. For my work to be effective, people have to be open and ready to show their vulnerable side, and that can't happen without trust.
So there is ABSOLUTELY ZERO GAIN for me to NOT BE HONEST and TRANSPARENT.
Let's discover if we're a good fit. End of.
