The Disharmony of Dissonance

Slip inside the eye of your mind

Don’t you know you might find

A better place to play...

You said that you’d never been

But all the things that you’ve seen

Slowly fade away

Step outside, summertime’s in bloom

Stand up beside the fireplace

Take that look off your face

You ain’t ever gonna burn my heart out …

She knows it is too late as we’re walking on by

Her soul slides away

Don’t look back in anger, I hear you say..

- British Rock Band Oasis, ‘’Don’t Look Back in Anger’’

I first heard the word ‘Dissonance’ when Oprah Winfrey was interviewing film star Elliott Page who had recently undergone surgery to become transgender in 2020.

The Inception and Juno actor felt a ‘’dissonance’’ between his body, and how he felt inside and spoke about the ‘explosion of creativity’’ after undergoing the life-changing surgery in 2020.

He suffered extreme anxiety, depression and mental agony before deciding to have the surgery, which he said ‘’ made him feel comfortable in his body for the first time’’.

We all have two voices inside of us that battle for supremacy. The voice from deep within you, that talks to you quietly, gently but forcefully urges you to follow the dream which has been in your heart.

This is what I term the ‘music of your soul' – the one that assures you that you are loved, you are accepted just as you are that you have a greater purpose, a legacy to live and leave.

This is the internal voice which urges you to thrive.

Then there is this other voice, amplified by your environment, your upbringing, and the circle of people around you which urges you the settle for the ordinary, not to leave your comfort zone, to stay comfortable, or as a friend told me earlier when I was going through the failure of my first company, BlueCloud Health:

''If I were you, I would seek something secure to safeguard and protect my earnings. You can earn good money. Accept safety and job security – it is better than not knowing the future''.

Those words: Security. Safety. Protect. Secure. Predictability.

I heard that a lot when I was writing Pay The Price in 2021. Many, many voices including my own told me it was a waste of time. Friends. Extended family. 25 Publishers. My own head.

The wiring of our brains.

These are the external voices that are urging you just to survive.

If you work to cultivate the musical notes of your external circumstances to align with your internal voice you experience resonance.

Your inner peace and happiness are amplified. You experience a ‘’burst of creativity’’.

This is what people mean by ‘’that resonates with me’’.

If your internal and external voices shouting at you are at odds and you listen and obey the latter, you experience dissonance.

You become at odds with yourself, just as Elliott Page was.

Disharmony, inner chaos and anxiety run riot.

This is what I call Green Flag Pain in my book, Pay The Price. I also talked about this kind of pain when I was invited as a guest on Sanjiv Patel’s podcast, ‘Just Another Lens’ – the short version of which you can watch here:

Simply put: The greater the misalignment between your internal voice and the external voices that try to put you down, the greater the dissonance.

The closer the alignment between your internal voice and those external voices, the greater the resonance.

The best way to amplify the inner voices inside of you is by changing your circle, adjusting your environment, and perhaps most importantly, carving out regular quiet time where you can get back in touch with yourself.

Dissonance not only affects our mental health. It affects our physical health too.

In 2002, Professor James Gizwenski, professor of Chemistry at UCLA found that the cells which make up the human body make sounds which lie in the range of human hearing.

These vibrations of cells are so unique, so harmonious, that they can actually be distinguished from cancerous cells and aid in the diagnosis of some forms of cancer.

As recently as 2018, Cardiologist Sean Wu, MD, PhD and Utkan Demirci, PhD, acoustic bio-engineers, at Stanford University, found they could use acoustics to manipulate heart cells into intricate patterns. A simple change in frequency and amplitude puts the cells in motion, guides them to a new position, and holds them in place. In other words, resonance can cure heart disease.

This science of healing even has its own name: Bioresonance. So aligning external and internal voices not only leads to better mental health – less stress, anxiety, even depression, and not only that but actual physical health, i.e. less Green Flag Pain.

So, based on this, which voice will you listen to?

As my favourite band, Switchfoot say in their song ‘’Voices’’:

‘’I used to listen to the radio

But I've got an army of voices in my head

Voices in my head

And we used to live in stereo

But I've got an army of voices in my head

Voices in my head

How come the friends and the foes that are invisible

Are the ones that made my soul most miserable?

Head's reeling from the feeling In my mind but I feel it in the physical

Why's the sunlight hiding?

Ain't letting any light in

It's a storm that I've been fighting

..Voices in my head…’’

- Voices, Switchfoot, 2018.

I couldn't have put it better myself.

I’m rooting for you,

Steven
