Stuck in The Waiting Room
Almost done, shoulda done this a year ago, I don't know why I waited
You know how I get, I put everything off in my personal life, you hear what I'm sayin'? (Sayin')
That was a joke (joke), yeah, it's hilarious, ain't it?
You'll spend the rest of your life in my backyard or back of my mind, depends how you see it
Put the shovel away, time to go back in the house now, you'll be out in a week
Tellin' me you want your room back, that's funny; what? You ain't got nowhere to sleep?
I'ma just look out the window and laugh at you, this is crazy to me
'Cause I thought you had me in prison this whole time
But I'm the one holdin' the keys (holdin' the keys, holdin' the keys, holdin' the keys)
- NF, Perception 2017
One day, while practising at a High Street community pharmacy chain, a patient urgently wanted to see me. Since I was busy with other patients, I politely showed her to the consultation room and promised to see her as soon as I was done.
I guess you know where this is going…
I forgot about her.
Half an hour later, she stormed out of the room visibly upset, frustrated and angry – she was in danger of being handed a parking ticket – and she was really ill.
Sometimes, we all feel this way.
As you read this, you may be stuck in a job you hate, toiling away in a forgotten corner, or simply waiting for that promotion. That baby. That breakthrough. That recognition. That pay rise.
Day after day, month after month, year after year.
Sometimes, we need to take that step forward and do the thing we have been putting off to change our circumstances. Make that call. Enrol in that course. Put pen to paper. Send that email. Go meet that person. Apply for that new job. Start your own business.
But other times, you’ve done everything, and there is absolutely nothing else to do.
Nothing.
You just have to stick it out and WAIT.
I understand.
I founded BlueCloud Health in 2014, right after graduating from business school. The first couple of years were brilliant.
But then we got stuck.
Then, the wait began.
I tried everything. At last count, we had had over 300 rejections.
Between 2014 and 2022, apart from one deal, I was stuck in the waiting room— I worked for the business for eight years without a paycheck.
Then, just in 2023, the company went bust, leaving me with a huge bill and nothing to show for my efforts.
Like that patient, I felt forgotten.
Suddenly, my debut book, Pay The Price showed up. I didn’t have a voice, a platform, or any influence. Suddenly, out of nowhere, as of September 2024, I have reached nearly half a million people on all five continents. It has also become an instant International best-seller, won four awards, and at last count, I had won three.
The strange thing was that during that period, I was still growing. I didn’t see it then, but I kept reading, taking courses, expanding my social network, and meeting people. Every failure was one more string to my bow.
So, when I felt the prompting to write the book, the material was already there. All the pain, frustration, agony, and failure—it all came out.
The 8-year wait had been worth it.
There are two kinds of wait: the Active Wait and the Passive Wait.
As Jeff Henderson says in his new book, ‘’What to Do Next,’’ we can adopt one of two mindsets:
1. Passive: Why me? Why me? Why me? My life is woe… moan, moan, moan. (which was me)
2. Acitve: Maybe I am being prepared for something bigger – one day, it would be worth it. How can I cooperate with that process?
For active waiting, four things need to combine.
Recommended by LinkedIn
1. My Person: Who am I, and what do I believe I am being ‘called’ to do?
2. My Purpose: What is my purpose? Have I been called to fix this problem?
3. My Passion: Do I have a strong passion to have a go-to fix this?
4. Timing: If not now, then when?
So what to do?
In each mindset case, the waiting period is the same. So why not go for the latter?
Build your resilience, knowledge, personal capacity, wisdom, and strength.
Read books. Go for courses. Get a mentor (or coach). Find good friends.
Make yourself uncomfortable.
So, when the time comes, you'll be ready.
We all want instant success (however we define it). But are we really equipped when it comes?
Being stuck in the waiting room is painful, but depending on our mindset, we can reduce (or exacerbate) that pain.
In a weird coincidence, as I write this, I am literally stuck in a waiting room with my son for an hour as we wait to change trains. He's grudgingly playing games on his Nintendo Switch while I gratefully write this newsletter (which is a day late.)
Being stuck waiting can be a good or bad thing, depending on how you see it.
Which will you choose?

1moGood reminder Steven N. Adjei we all have many, many things to balance with the time we are given, so waiting presents an opportunity to embrace the next one in the que.
