BOATBUILDING NEWS: THE PODCAST – EPISODE 5, FEATURING NIELS KLARENBEEK!

In episode 5 of her marine-dedicated podcast, Hollie Smith, Director of Marine Engineering at Navis Consulting, interviews Niels Klarenbeek, Show Director for METSTRADE.

Although Niels has been with the company for 12 years, in the last two years, he has had the privilege of organising the METSTRADE show as the Show Director.

About METSTRADE

The METSTRADE Show is the world’s largest trade exhibition for the marine leisure industry. In addition, it also caters for three specialist sectors, Superyachts, Marinas and Yards and Construction Materials.

In this podcast Niels explains the highs, lows and complexities of organising such a prestigious event.

“Large exhibitions like METSTRADE takes a whole year of planning for only three days. Organising the METSTRADE show is the ultimate forum of project management, everything you have done you can see and that’s why you need a great team around you to deliver it.”

Biggest Challenge

Niels’ biggest challenge was undoubtedly COVID-19. The RAI Centre was closed for months and it had a huge impact on the business.

Like many others, METSTRADE organised a hybrid show last year, which came with its own set of challenges following numerous last-minute cancellations. Nevertheless, they maintained their confidence in the industry as exhibitors reported an extraordinary and successful event.

“We have had a pretty hard time with Covid, but on the other hand it’s almost like an advertisement for shows because this very single place provides the serendipity of meeting people that you didn’t know before and that is definitely something you can’t have on the internet or any other alternative.”

The Future

With just over two weeks until METSTRADE Niels’ current mindset is very much focused on the short term, delivering a magnificent METSTRADE show. This includes all aspects that belong to its DNA such as the prestigious DAME awards, breakfast briefing, content program, happy hours and the Boat Builder Awards at the Maritime Museum.

Signs show they are set to deliver another spectacular show. They have more than 1400 exhibitors from all over the world, with visitor registration also indicating that they are well on track.
