Being new to a field can be a good thing. Fresh perspectives lead to new ideas. For example, some of the best research ideas come from students who think differently. Many problems are solved by people from different fields. So, when you feel like an outsider, remember that your fresh view is valuable.
𝟮. 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴
It’s important to have a learning mindset instead of a performance mindset. People with impostor syndrome often focus too much on their performance and see mistakes as proof they are not good enough. Instead, try to focus on what you can learn from each experience. See mistakes as part of the learning process, not as failures.
𝟯. 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲
Many people feel the same way. A survey by Vantage Hill Partners found that fear of being seen as incompetent is a top concern for executives worldwide. Knowing you’re not alone can help you feel more confident.
𝟰. 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀
Make a habit of celebrating your successes, no matter how small they seem. Write them down and revisit them when you’re feeling doubtful. This practice can remind you of your accomplishments and help you see that you do deserve your success.
𝟱. 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸
Ask for feedback from trusted colleagues or mentors. Their perspectives can help you see your strengths and areas for improvement more clearly. Positive feedback can boost your confidence, while constructive criticism can guide your growth.
𝟲. 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀
Break down your big goals into smaller, achievable steps. This can make your tasks feel more manageable and help you see your progress more clearly. Achieving these smaller goals can build your confidence and reinforce your sense of capability.

Discussing your feelings with a trusted friend, mentor, or therapist can be very helpful. Sometimes just voicing your concerns can make them feel less overwhelming. Others can offer support and share their own experiences, which can help you feel less isolated.
𝟴. 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀
When you catch yourself thinking negatively, try to reframe those thoughts in a more positive light. For example, instead of thinking, “I’m not good enough for this role,” try thinking, “I was chosen for this role because I have valuable skills and experience.”
𝟵. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀
When someone praises your work, accept it graciously instead of downplaying your achievements. A simple “Thank you” can go a long way in helping you internalize positive feedback and believe in your capabilities.
𝟭𝟬. 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴
Commit to ongoing personal and professional development. The more you learn and grow, the more confident you’ll feel in your abilities. This can help you counter feelings of inadequacy and impostor syndrome.
Overcoming impostor syndrome is possible. Next time you step out of your comfort zone, focus on learning and bring your unique perspective to the table. Remember, you’re not alone, and many others feel the same way. Your contributions are valuable, and you have something important to offer. Keep pushing forward, and don’t let impostor syndrome hold you back. You deserve your success.
