Dos and Don'ts of Brand Photography
Brand photography is an incredibly powerful tool to grow your business by attracting your ideal clients and building know like and trust with them. Brand images can become your silent sellers, doing the hard work for you so that enquiry calls become just a formality for people to say yes to working with you.
To make your brand photography the most effective, there are some approaches that definitely work better than others! Here we've collated the top dos and don'ts of brand photography to ensure your visuals are converting for you.
DOS AND DON'TS
DO share your story through your brand images and showcase how you can help people. People love to imagine what it would be like to spend time with you and how you can ease their pain. Story telling also makes you relatable and real
DON'T be afraid to be yourself! Show your brand values, personality and differences so that you are relatable and real; but also memorable
DO plan and prepare for your brand shoot to make the most of your experience. From the stories you want to share through your location, outfits and props to the types of images you want to capture. Ensure you have considered timings too to have your images taken in the right time of day for the appropriate lighting for your brand, as well as making sure you have enough time to take all your images
But equally, DON'T overthink it! There will never be the 'perfect time' so jump in, trust the process and your photographer! We're here to guide you through your experience to create marketing assets that can change your business
DO have fun with it! The more relaxed and in the moment you can be, the better your images will be as they are naturally you
DON'T overly pose but find the positions that are most flattering for you so that you don't appear stiff and unnatural. I know the minute someone tells me to stand in a certain way I go rigid which is not a good look. It's much better to be in the moment as above than too staged
DO use natural lighting wherever possible. It's much more complimentary and softer to our skin
DON'T think that you always have to wear your brand colours. More often than not, neutral shades and unpatterned garments are the best in images to allow your face to be the hero of the shot. I would advise wearing what makes you feel great
DO get creative with how you introduce your brand colours into your images. Props and accessories are a great way to involve your colours as well as using your locations and environment
DON'T be something you're not. Your audience want to see the authentic you and feel like they know you through your images. It's important to build the trust with your clients through your visuals so that when they see you in person, even if it's on zoom, they already feel like they know you
DO create a variety of styles of brand images to engage and entertain your audience. From overviews to close ups and flat lays to brand images with superhero space for your marketing message
DON'T include images in your shot list that you feel you 'should' have as your industry standard. You know the ones everyone has...working in a coffee shop at a lap top or sitting on your kitchen bench with your favourite mug. If that's your brand, then fantastic! But, if that's not the way you usually work, find your own brand alternative
DO ensure your images are seasonal to be relatable. It would just look very odd in summer to share images with you wearing a woolly hat. We know a confused mind doesn't buy so keep clear and current with your images
DON'T use stock photos. They can be spotted a mile off and will stop you appearing consistent and on brand. So many others have them too you will not stand out from the crowd. Ensure when you have your brand images you include shots which can be used as placeholders and sign-posters, that don't include you
DO say yes to you and your growth through brand photography!
