Dr. Sham Rock's Journey - Pursuing Passion as a Profession

Preamble…

Born in an aristocratic family in north Kerala (India) as the eldest son of a planter, Shyam had a keen interest in drumming from the age of 10. During those early days, he got very little exposure to music from the media. But that didn’t stop him from pursuing his dreams. Whatever beats he heard on Radio Ceylon, he would experiment on chairs, plates and anything that could resonate sound. That’s when his love for drumming began.

His formal training began at school from Mr. Suhas, his first drum teacher, and later from his college teacher Mr. Rajiv. He was growing so passionate about drumming that he would get on any instrument, day or night, to practice drumming. Though his father encouraged drumming as his passion, he wanted Shyam to become a doctor. Despite that, Shyam chased his dream to pursue his passion as a profession.

The most fascinating aspect that Shyam truly believed in is that as long as you are crazy about drumming, you don’t even need a proper drum to play the music. Any object that resonates sound could do the job. His constant search for improvisation led him to be a part of the college band and many local orchestras.

The twist….

Following one’s dream is not often very easy. While he was forced to look after the family business post his studies, his mind kept wandering into the world of music. He succumbed to the pressure when his friends encouraged him to work for an MNC in Dubai. But that turned out to be a blessing in disguise for him as he met the one and only Julie Ann O’Dell, the founder of Dubai Drums, while working at the MNC.

The world of opportunity opened up to Shyam as Julie Ann took a liking to him seeing his drumming skills. He performed with her at times and it helped him learn a lot about African drumming and drum circles. Yet another blessing in disguise happened when the financial recession hit companies in Dubai and he decided to return to India and follow his passion.

Before starting out on his own, he did his thorough research on the industry, regarding musicians, music forms and everything related to drumming. He set out on his own despite his family believing that leaving Dubai was not a good choice.

The journey…

Drum Events India and the band “Afro de Asia” were born in Bangalore as a result of Shyam’s dedicated efforts. Shyam transformed to Shamrock as he overcame obstacles and established his footprint in the industry. To add cherry to the cake, he brought over a traditional drummer from the National Dance Company, Ghana, along with a set of traditional African drums and trained him to facilitate drum circle.

His very first performance was for the corporate giant Infosys that gave him a big break in his career. Not only was the event a huge success, he also got references from that programme. Calls started pouring in from big companies like HP and IBM. Since then, he has done over 1000 shows till date. He was lucky enough to be trained by Arthur Hull of Village Music California who is known as the Guru of drum circle facilitators.

What’s unique about drum circle?

Drum circle is a huge and powerful act. Anybody can be a part of it and hence Shyam created the tag line “For all ages, wages and stages.” The magic of drum circle enforces positivity, creativity, fun and brings rhythm and energy to the environment.

Shyam used authentic African instruments to create rhythmic patterns and the golden triangle protocol. He created modules for various groups enhancing team building and stress busting. Drum circle also helps in change management, employee engagement, leadership development, music therapy, stress management, and many more.

He masters these solutions and helps others reap the benefits out of it through his choice of instruments, timing, seating arrangement, dynamics and the vibe of the crowd. His specialities are many. Crowd looping is another interactive music technique he created to emphasize that anything that produces sound can be converted into a music instrument if used creatively. With various sounds from various sources, he helps the participants loop and converts it into a creative exercise.

His new project named “Drumatica” tells the tale, tradition and transformation of rhythm. It takes you through various rhythms across the world through an act. This virtual tour starts from the aboriginal African tribal rhythm, then Arabic, Japanese Taiko, Latin samba, traditional Indian and Western beats to the most innovative LED aqua drumming.

Inventions...

Apart from sound sculptures and musical pieces, Shyam has also designed a new drum (not yet named) which can also create sound modulation while playing. This 2-piece drum is played with sticks but tone can be controlled with pedals. The good news is that it will soon get patented.

Interventions…

Shyam is not your usual commercial performer. He is keen on social activities, charity works and training. He helps NGOs raise funds through free shows. He conducts free sessions for autistic kids, old age residents and works for environmental drives and social awareness campaigns.

Accomplishments...

It has been a rewarding journey for Drum Events. Within 7 years of inception in 2011 , Drum Events became the numero uno in the interactive and entertainment industry, having performed over 1000 shows in India and abroad. Operations were expanded to Mumbai, Delhi, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Shyam also holds the record for conducting the largest drum circle in the world with more than 4000 participants at Kittur Rani Chennamma Stadium, Bangalore ! And the largest corporate drum circle for NTT Data at KTPO Convention Centre.

Drum Events was a part of premium events like Delhi International Arts Festival, Indo-African Summit, Indian Premier League, Indian Tennis League and IIT-Techniche to name a few.

The company has grown from 50 to 5000 drums with a great collection of various percussion instruments across the world. The core team size has grown to 5 artists with 3 African drummers and many renowned artists working in collaboration with Drum Events. Shyam has become one of the most sought-after drum circle facilitators in the corporate circle and has inspired many young aspirants.

He was conferred with Doctorate in Music by Commonwealth Vocational University in 2017. Recently he was honoured with “Global Leaders Award” at New Delhi for his contribution to Entertainment and Media. He was also conferred with honorary membership in All India Reporters Association with a designation of State Cultural Secretary.

Amalgamation…

Shamrock is more than just a drummer. He believes in learning and experimenting. He doesn’t hesitate to create new eco systems in the world of music and drumming. Currently, he is on a journey to integrate and explore the dimensions of alternative music and to sustain the traditional values and cross culture scopes. His future projects include application of drumming in fitness, writing a book about group drumming experiences, spreading drum circle culture in communities for integration, making new music albums and more. He is a living example of ‘an ordinary man doing extraordinary things.’
