Dreamaking in Public: Vincent Lee - The Host of Wings & Sales

Hey, before we get to the Q&A - if you prefer an audiovisual experience, check out my interview here: https://linktr.ee/ex.vicarious

Otherwise, welcome to the 3rd instalment of “Dreamaking in Public”!

(Think “Building in Public”, but not just with companies. It's building a life around your biggest dreams, and exploring the unconventional path it takes to get there.).

Every fortnight, you’ll hear from a dreamaker around their early 20s, who is building anything from tech startups, streaming services, branding agencies, podcasts, & better systems and philosophies for their life.

BUT, they’ll be back on the show every few months so we can follow up on their progress, setbacks and learnings on the journey together.

So if you're on an unconventional path chasing wild dreams, or curious about how others like you are starting, this is for you.

Otherwise, back to the Q&A! (est. 4 minute read).

What to expect

  • Escaping “the rat race” through tech sales
  • How to overcome shyness and talk to 100s of people a day
  • Compounding personal growth with the “three 20s” morning routine

🔒Vincent Lee is the definition of “hard work beats talent”.

(He actually has many talents, but talking to people wasn’t one).

So how did he go from “shy introvert” to confident sales prodigy?

Hustle.

At first, this hustle was misplaced. He’d completed the EY Game Changers program during uni to land a Top 4 vacationer role that all his peers were gunning for.

But after attending a Fishburners event and meeting 🌞 Dan Brockwell , he saw an opportunity to “escape the rat race”.

2 months later, he found himself in Earlywork ’s 5th cohort, where he learned everything about tech sales.

Hundreds of job applications later, he landed a SDR role at Tyro Payments. In less than 90 days, he was averaging

☎️ 60 outbound calls per day, and

💸 1-$1.2mil per month in sales (transaction volume)

He now averages 276 calls a week at Arctic Wolf, converting 1 in 3 to meetings.

During all this, he still attends uni and has been building “Wings & Sales”, a podcast where he publicly learns from sales leaders while devouring succulent wings 🍗

I thoroughly enjoyed delving into the mindset that has made all of this possible for Vincent in this week’s podcast.

Find the full ep in comments, or catch the Q&A below (est 4 min read).

Q&A

How did your tech sales journey begin?

In my second year of uni, I found myself caught in the rat race, hustling for internships alongside everyone else.

I joined the EY Game Changers Club, which fast-tracked me to an EY internship.

But then I realised there was a great opportunity in Tech Sales. I stumbled across this path after attending a Fishburners event, where I met Dan Brockwell. I asked him for advice, and he suggested sales and marketing as the best avenues for me.

Two months later, I joined the Earlywork Academy and graduated within three weeks. After grinding through hundreds of job applications, I finally got my first role at Tyro. I worked there for a few months and have since transitioned into cyber security.”

How did you get over being shy, and do you still consider yourself an introvert?

“No, I don’t consider myself an introvert now. I’d say I’m pretty extroverted. I overcame being shy by realising something a bit morbid—that we’re all going to disappear one day.

After a hundred years, no one will remember us, but they will remember the impact we had and how we made them feel.

People won’t remember how much money we made or the job we had; it’s about the impression we left. That shift made me stop worrying about being judged or overthinking.

I adopted a three-second rule—if you want to say something, count to three and just say it, or move on. It’s important not to stay stuck in your head worrying about what others think. A lot of this mindset came after I read The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck* by Mark Manson.”

You mentioned starting your day early and being productive. What does your sleep schedule look like, and how have you implemented consistency with it?

“My current schedule is sleeping by 9 or 10 PM and waking up at 5 AM. I learned from Alex Hormozi that if you want to wake up early, you need to sleep early—so the key is to set an alarm to go to bed, not just to wake up.

Once I’m up, I follow the "three twenties" method from my career coach: the first 20 minutes are light exercise, the second 20 minutes are self-reflection and gratitude journaling, and the last 20 minutes are for learning something new, like reading a book on self-improvement or negotiation.

This routine compounds over time—by reading daily, for example, you can finish a book in a week or month, and that adds up to a wealth of knowledge. The real power lies in mindset.

People can take away your job or possessions, but they can never take away your mindset. That’s what separates top performers and successful people from others.
