How Dreams Become Reality: Angus McGlynn - The 19 y/o Founder of Refract with $1B+ clients

Hey, quick note before we get to the Q&A - I’ve launched a podcast!

Every Q&A (including this one) now comes with a podcast episode, where you can watch and listen to the guest yourself.

If you want to skip straight to the podcast, here’s the link: https://linktr.ee/ex.vicarious

Otherwise, back to the Q&A! (est. 3 minute read).

What to expect:

  • how to complete 5 days worth of work in 8 hours,
  • how an art gallery helped Angus drop out (and learn quicker),
  • why you must be a generalist designer in 2024

He’s just 19 - but has already landed Startmate and Fishburners as clients.

Yep, I’m talking about Angus McGlynn 🚀 .

The timeline of his achievements are wild.

At 14 👉Founded Medelo. , a wellness brand w/ 7 stockists and sold across Greater Sydney

At 16 👉 ADHD prevented him from learning at school, so he dropped out and moved to Sydney to learn from experience

At 17 👉 Designed and shipped an app for the NSW Government

At 18 👉 Used work experience (INFIX, HowToo, EBPearls) to skip undergrad and start a Masters of Design.

At 19 👉 Founded Refract and is now a design partner to Fishburners, Startmate, Galileo Ventures & more. Sponsored Startmate’s Demo Day this week!

I listened to this ep multiple times myself to comprehend some of the crazy things Angus has done so early on.

Couldn’t hurt you to listen once, true?

But if you're short on time, catch my favourite parts in the Q&A below 👇

Q&A

There’s so much that you’re doing - what’s made you faster and more productive?

“Timing myself. That’s what I’ve been doing—if I’m doing one landing page for a website, I’ll spend four-hour blocks on it and say, "Okay, in this four-hour block, I got this much work done." You can’t measure it down to the second, but seeing how much work you get done in that time, and reflecting each day on what you’ve completed, is massive. You need to measure every aspect of your business, and yourself—what you're doing, how much time you’re spending, and whether it's productive.

I’ve tried to take that into all work as well. I tell clients I’ll have something through to them in an hour or two, and it becomes, "I have to get this done in minutes" to myself. Setting those pressures for when you need things done, internally or with the client—even if it’s due in a few days—helps.

For example, I had one client recently where I was just going to have one or two pages done to send through to them. But I ended up completing the whole website at a high quality in eight hours of time.”

Who’s been the biggest influence on you for the path you're on today?

“My family, especially my grandma, has been a huge influence. She owns a large art gallery in Sydney and also dropped out at 16 to start her career in the sixties.

We've always had that entrepreneurial spirit in our blood.

I think that's where I take the most inspiration, knowing it's been done before, and now I just need to execute and see how far I can go.”

What does design mean to you?

“I think design is about listening to people, and it’s about empathy. Design comes in so many forms now. Designers often view themselves as graphic, product, or industrial designers, but there's a base level where it's not about the tools or medium. It’s about how you solve the problem and understand who you're designing for.

That's what makes a good designer—understanding, not just technical things like knowing Figma, but crafting something that resonates and works best in its context.

Design is about asking, “how can I solve this?”. I think many designers box themselves into specific areas, which makes sense, but now there’s such a need for more generalist designers. It might be a bit controversial, but with new tools, including AI, there’s a need for generalists who can get in early and build out everything. That's where I think design is going.”
