Is Email Mayhem A Path to Greater Enlightenment?

Is Email Mayhem A Path to Greater Enlightenment?

My inbox is regularly flooded with emails. I admit, it is my fault. Because…

 I subscribe to them willingly!

Attracted by the insights of various health, wealth, and mindset coaches I enjoy:

  • Observing how other entrepreneurs blend product and service delivery
  • Seeing the mix of information, personality -  and edutainment.
  • Taking in strategies and guidance on sales and marketing.

There are days when my mental wealth and emotional capacity are strong, and the emails are a source of incredible inspiration and fun.  I feel connected to a powerful, universal supergrid of energy, confidence and actionability.

...But there are days when these emails are overwhelmingly toxic. In fact they should carry a government health warning (plus prescribe 3 cloves of garlic and a crucifix).

THE T.E.S.A. CYCLE OF DOOM

What does it look like? The emails lead me down rabbit holes stuffed with articles and videos. They stir up a weird blend of emotions and sensations – fear, tension, anxiety, and unsettling nervous energy. So I track a couple of variables. I make a note of what's happening to my mental, emotional and physical states. And my answer to the much bigger question "why now?"

T- My THOUGHTS: These entrepreneurs make business sound so easy. What am I doing wrong, they seem to be making millions?  I’m not cut out for being an entrepreneur. All this marketing stuff is too hard, it's impossible.

E - My EMOTIONS: sadness, fear, anxiety, feeling inferior & incompetent.

S - My SENSATIONS: Tension in stomach and heart. Nervous energy in muscles. Paralysis of thought.

A - My ACTIONS & OUTCOMES: Don’t feel like working. Not thinking straight. Throw myself into non-business related tasks to feel better about myself. Procrastinate and waste time. Feel demotivated and incompetent.

This is the T.E.S.A. cycle of doom in full swing:

  • Troubling Thoughts
  •  Emotional unrest
  • Stressful Sensations, and
  • Actions that lead to procrastination, incompetence and shame.

4 STRATEGIES TO COUNTERACT T.E.S.A.

As an emotional intelligence coach and therapist who works with entrepreneurs and executive professionals, I’ve identified four strategies to counteract my cycle of doom:

  1. Opting out of reading the emails altogether.
  2. Reading them but resisting the temptation to click through to links.
  3. Deepening self-awareness to understand what these emails trigger mentally.
  4. Recording and analyzing T.E.S.A. Cycles to learn how to reverse its effects.

For those who find themselves caught in this cycle, overwhelmed by the demands of entrepreneurship and the constant influx of marketing messages, I offer guidance and support.

I am an emotional intelligence coach and therapist. I work with entrepreneurs and executive level professionals who want to stop feeling they are failing miserably in business. And strengthen their skills at dealing with feelings and experience personal healing.
