Embrace the Morning Light

I've always believed in the power of habits. They shape our lives, define our routines, and ultimately determine our success. However, adopting and maintaining new habits can be quite challenging. I've faced this struggle countless times, particularly when trying to wake up early for my Miracle Morning routine. There were mornings I failed to rise with the sun, and those failures felt like a personal setback. Yet, I've learned that it's essential to handle these lapses without feeling guilty or unaccomplished.

When I first set out to change my morning routine, I imagined the incredible productivity and peace it would bring. The idea of starting my day with exercise, meditation, and goal-setting was thrilling. But the reality was different. There were days I hit snooze and days I just couldn't get out of bed. Initially, each missed morning felt like a defeat, triggering a cascade of guilt and self-doubt. But I began to realize that these emotional reactions were counterproductive.

Every sunrise brings a new opportunity to grow; embrace each moment with self-compassion and persistence.

From a psychological standpoint, habit formation is a complex process. It's not just about willpower or discipline; it's deeply intertwined with our emotions and mental state. Understanding this helped me approach my habit changes in a more forgiving and sustainable way. I started to see my lapses not as failures, but as opportunities to learn and grow. This shift in perspective was crucial for my journey.

One particular instance stands out. I decided to give up alcohol for a month. It wasn't easy, and I did slip up once during a social event. Instead of berating myself, I reflected on why I had chosen this habit in the first place. The lapse didn't negate the benefits I had already experienced, like better sleep and increased energy. This reflection taught me the value of self-compassion in the process of habit formation.

Self-compassion is essential because beating ourselves up over lapses only reinforces negative emotions and makes it harder to get back on track. I began to reframe my approach by setting a predefined duration for my new habits. Instead of committing to waking up early indefinitely, I set a goal of doing it for 30 days. This made the process feel more manageable and less daunting. It also allowed me to reflect on what I learned during this period, even if it was short-lived.

Intermittent habits, much like interval training in running or taking breaks during study sessions, became a part of my strategy. I found that integrating new habits in a balanced way, with periods of rest or variation, helped me maintain them more effectively. For example, allowing myself one day a week to sleep in without guilt made it easier to stick to my Miracle Morning routine the other six days.

Through these experiences, I've realized that adopting new habits is not about perfection but about progress. It's about being kind to ourselves when we stumble and celebrating our successes, no matter how small. By sharing my journey and personal anecdotes, I hope to encourage others to approach habit formation with self-reflection and self-compassion. Let's remember that every step, even the missteps, are part of the path to personal growth and lasting change.

Remember, the goal is progress, not perfection. Set achievable, short-term goals and reflect on what you’ve learned from each step, even the missteps. Like interval training, allow yourself breaks and be flexible. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small, and approach each day with a forgiving heart. I’ve learned through my journey that adopting new habits is not about being flawless but about being resilient. You have the power to create lasting change, and it starts with embracing yourself fully, lapses and all. Keep moving forward, and remember, every step counts.

The Rohingya refugees in Myanmar are enduring unimaginable hardship. Facing ongoing genocide and living without basic rights, they experience daily insecurity and discrimination. Surviving in South and Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, presents immense challenges. Sleepless nights and a constant struggle for survival characterize their reality.
