Embracing Progress Over Achievement: A Path to Peace and Personal Growth

Embracing Progress Over Achievement: A Path to Peace and Personal Growth

Are you constantly feeling anxious about not being where you want to be in life? You're not alone. Many of us have experienced the pressure to achieve, thinking it will bring us peace. However, as we'll explore in this post, true fulfillment comes from focusing on progress rather than achievement.

The Illusion of Achievement

For years, I chased one achievement after another, believing that each milestone would finally bring me the peace I craved. Spoiler alert: it didn't. Surprisingly, I found peace when I stripped away the focus on external achievements.

The Real Game: Progress and Becoming

As I've grown older and wiser, I've realized that achievement isn't the end goal. It's merely a part of a larger game. The real game is about:

  1. Progress: Continuously moving forward, regardless of the pace
  2. Becoming: Evolving as a person and developing your character

There is no final destination or arrival point. Life is a journey of constant evolution and growth.

Finding Joy in the Process

The Bible offers an interesting perspective on this topic. In James 1:2-4, we read:

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

This passage highlights an essential truth: part of finding joy lies in who we become through the process of facing challenges. It's through these experiences that we gain wisdom and develop our character.

The Anxiety of Feeling Behind

Feeling anxious about "being behind" is essentially worrying about the future. It's a mindset that keeps us living in a state of lack. However, when we shift our focus to the present moment and the process we're currently in, we gain the ability to appreciate what we already have.

Breaking Free from the Scarcity Mindset

We live in a world that constantly bombards us with messages of scarcity:

  • You're not enough
  • You don't have enough
  • You're not fast enough
  • You're going to run out
  • You're behind

These messages can lead us to live hurried lives, always feeling like we're lacking something. But the truth is, abundance surrounds us if we choose to see it.

Three Strategies for Moving Forward in Peace

To rewire our thinking and find peace in our progress, consider these three strategies:

  1. Focus on the present and what you have Stop worrying about where you're not Concentrate on the steps right in front of you Be diligent in planning, but don't obsess over the distant future
  2. Measure the progress you've made Take time to reflect on your growth (spiritually, emotionally, professionally) Look at your progress over longer periods (e.g., quarterly instead of weekly)
  3. Record your progress Keep track of your accomplishments and steps forward Make a list of everything you've done in the last 3-6 months to progress your life and business You'll likely be surprised by how much you've achieved

Embracing the Beauty of Progress

Remember, progress, especially when it's challenging, is beautiful. It's through these experiences that we develop wisdom and character. As the saying goes, "Wisdom is better than gold."

So, take a moment to reflect: Who are you becoming? How does focusing on progress rather than achievement make you feel?

“Progress, especially when it’s challenging, is beautiful.” It’s easy to focus on achievement, but real growth comes from who we become in the process.

I've also found that just starting a task when you feel stuck is powerful. Once you're working, your mind focuses on that and no longer on what was holding you back. I sometimes use a two-minute hack. I tell myself I need to work on this topic for two minutes. Every time, I realise hours later that it worked again.
