Conquering Imposter Syndrome in a New Job!

As a recruitment company, we understand that the journey of landing a new job can be exhilarating and nerve-wracking at the same time. While the prospect of moving into a new sector, attaining a higher salary, and taking on more responsibility is undoubtedly exciting, it can also trigger feelings of self-doubt and anxiety known as "Imposter Syndrome."

Our teams here at MPA have got together to shed light on this common phenomenon and provide guidance on how to overcome it, allowing you to embrace your true potential and excel in your new position.

Imposter Syndrome often rears its head when transitioning to a new job, especially in unfamiliar territory. You may find yourself asking questions like, "Do I deserve this role?" or "Will I be able to meet the expectations of my new position?"

These feelings can be intensified when moving into a new sector, as it involves navigating uncharted waters and adapting to different challenges. Additionally, the allure of a higher salary and more responsibility may come with a fear of not living up to the perceived expectations. It's crucial to acknowledge that Imposter Syndrome affects individuals at all levels of experience and can strike regardless of external accomplishments.

As recruiters that are here to help you throughout your journey, we have put together some tips we think might help:

  1. Recognise the Phenomenon: The first step in overcoming Imposter Syndrome is acknowledging its existence. Remind yourself that it is a common experience shared by many high-achieving professionals and doesn't diminish your skills or accomplishments.
  2. Celebrate Past Successes: Reflect on your journey so far and remember the challenges you've conquered, the skills you've developed, and the accomplishments you've achieved. These past successes are a testament to your capabilities.
  3. Seek Support and Mentorship: Connect with colleagues, mentors, or friends who can offer guidance and encouragement. Discuss your concerns openly and gain valuable insights from those who have walked a similar path.
  4. Embrace Learning Opportunities: Recognise that moving into a new sector and handling more responsibility is a chance to grow and learn. Embrace the opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge, viewing challenges as stepping stones toward personal and professional development.
  5. Set Realistic Goals: Break down your objectives into smaller, achievable milestones. Celebrate each accomplishment, no matter how minor, as it demonstrates progress and competence.
  6. Embrace Feedback: Feedback, both positive and constructive, is an essential aspect of personal growth. Embrace feedback with an open mind, viewing it as an opportunity to improve and refine your skills.
