Employee Spotlight - Meet Tom Phillips
In this employee spotlight, we're talking to IT Support Engineer, Tom Phillips to find out what led to his career at Alcon.
When did you join Alcon?
I joined Alcon in 2017 as a despatch operative. A few months went by before I was asked to take on the role as a kitting operative to feed the assembly lines. I spent four years in this role, before completely changing gear and moving into my current role as an IT Support Engineer.
Do you have any qualifications? What inspired you to pursue the career you have today?
The career path I am on currently was not what I had initially planned. After leaving college where I actually studied Music Technology, I looked for any job I could find and ended up quickly in warehousing. Through my time spent at Alcon as a kitting operative, I had quickly become seen as a computer-whizz. My manager then put forward to the business to see that my skills would be better suited in a different environment. My exposure to computers throughout my childhood enabled me to develop the necessary skills and knowledge that I use daily.
What does your job entail?
Every day can be different, but the job role mainly consists of troubleshooting and working on new projects. Troubleshooting usually involves following a logical path to find out what is causing an issue, and then working out what the most appropriate cause of action is to resolve the issue. Projects I work can vary; these are usually quality of life improvements that can make other people's jobs easier, other times it can be improving the overall infrastructure of our IT framework.

What do you like most about your role at Alcon?
My role allows me to interact with everyone across the business. This means I get to hear what issues everyone is having, and it allows me to offer the support they need to help them with their own job roles. These interactions help me gain a wider set of knowledge of how people work within different departments, which in turn helps in how to approach different situations.
I've left my mark on Alcon - I've built many great working relationships with those who work at Alcon and have become an invaluable resource. Assisting the company's expansion into a new building and seeing the challenges that are involved is a unique experience that I've been happy to help work on.
What are some achievements you’re proud of both within work and personal success?
When I first started in my current role, I worked alongside different departments, getting to know how they did their own jobs. I quickly discovered that there were several time-consuming processes that were being done regularly and not being completed as efficiently as possible. I had come to find a way where we could essentially automate most of these processes and offer a dynamic way of looking at the data we have. This would come to save working hours of other team so they could focus more on their job roles, rather than tedious admin work. Being able to offer data analysis more fluidly led to more expansion within the business, and allowed Alcon to make better critical decisions.
What's the best advice you can give to someone who just started their career?
I would say it's best to just remember that everyone is human - people all behave differently. I have found that with my approach to dealing with people, is that helping them to understand the reasons why things may have to be done in a certain way, usually goes a long way in building working relationships, and in turn being happier at work. I also find it's important to make sure that you're developing your own skills by asking questions so you can come to an understanding. Although developing your career is important, always remember to have a good work-life balance.
