The installation of the transformers is a response to the growing demand for electricity, which has placed significant pressure on the older transformers and led to frequent power cuts, as mentioned in the government's statement.

Following the inauguration, Atishi remarked that electricity is a basic necessity for the people, and since coming into power in 2015, the government has concentrated on enhancing Delhi's power infrastructure. She highlighted that Delhi now delivers 24x7 electricity without power cuts, delivers the cheapest electricity rates in the country, and even delivers free electricity to some households.

In 2024, Croatian firm Končar signed an agreement with Siemens Energy on the establishment of Končar – Transformer Tanks (KTK). The joint venture will concentrate on manufacturing transformer tanks. The strategic alliance desires to significantly boost manufacturing capacities, facilitate the sale of a portion of future capacity to Siemens Energy, foster the mutual exchange of expertise and knowledge, mitigate risks, and substantially improve the global supply of transformer tanks, Končar said.

Furthermore, it revealed it would hold a 60% stake in KTK, with Siemens Energy owning the remainder. Končar said the remarkable surge in demand for transformers is one of the most significant outcomes of the energy transition, stressing that it is gaining full traction across the European Union.

In 2023, Hitachi Energy introduced its groundbreaking solution to protect distribution transformers from short voltage: Transformers with Transient Voltage Protection (TVP) Technology. The company held a major event to inaugurate its advanced transformers factory in Bac Ninh, Vietnam, and it was the perfect occasion to reveal this pioneering technology for the industry. Over 200 attendees, including partners, customers, and employees, enjoyed the product launch ceremony at the new company facility with a display of a life-size demo unit. This memorable event marked another milestone for the company’s dedication to developing creative solutions for the energy industry, as the Bac Ninh factory will deliver distribution transformers with TVP Technology combined into the product. The solution sets new heights of resilience and reliability for transformers.

In 2023, in a groundbreaking moment for the city of Bengaluru, Energy Minister KJ George inaugurated the country’s inaugural underground transformer center, a substantial step towards modernizing the city’s power distribution infrastructure. This monumental achievement echoes Bengaluru’s commitment to the reliability, safety, and aesthetic improvements of its urban landscape.

A Milestone in Power Distribution

Located at 15th Avenue, Malleswaram, the underground transformer center is a collaborative effort between the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). With a budget of Rs 1.98 crore, this pioneering project boasts a 500 KVA capacity transformer.

Beneath the Surface

To ensure the convenience and safety of Bengaluru’s residents, the underground center features a specially constructed chamber beneath the earth’s surface. This chamber is backed with a 30 mm cement block, delivering a stable foundation for the electrical transformers. At a depth of 10 feet below the road’s surface, this innovative center sets new standards in power distribution. While BESCOM controls the electrical aspects, BBMP is accountable for the civil works. The station includes a 500 KVA capacity oil-free transformer, a 5-way LT distribution box, UPS, an 8-way solid-state ring main unit, a water pump, and an air control system. BBMP contributed Rs 64 lakh to fund the civil works, and the entire project was completed in just 365 days.
