Empowering the Future: Nurturing Youth Engagement and Progress in Local Governance

In 2023, the American Planning Association Trend Report highlighted a growing concern: the risk of youth disillusionment and disengagement. Young generations, specifically Gen Z and Gen Alpha, are acutely aware of the pressing issues facing our world, such as climate change, technology's profound influence, and the need for meaningful actions related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). In this blog post, we explore how the younger generations are challenging the status quo and how local government officials and planners can actively encourage and support their efforts to drive change in our communities.

Youth and the Climate Crisis

One of the most significant issues driving youth engagement is climate change. Gen Z and Gen Alpha understand the far-reaching consequences of inaction and are determined to protect their future and their children. Their passion and commitment to climate action are potent motivators for change.

Digital Natives and Technology

Growing up surrounded by technology, younger generations are comfortable with it and eager to harness its potential for positive change. They have the skills and the drive to utilize technology for community betterment, from civic engagement to innovative solutions for local challenges.

DEI: A Call for Meaningful Action

Younger generations also demand meaningful action on diversity, equity, and inclusion. They bring new and redefined perspectives on personal identities and push the boundaries of what's possible. They challenge existing systems, structures, and policies to create a more equitable and inclusive society.

Planners as Change Agents

Local Government officials, especially planners, are the change agents of our communities, and it is their responsibility to embrace and support the energy and ideas of our younger citizens. Here are some strategies to encourage and support youth engagement:

Youth Advisory Boards

Establish youth advisory boards or councils to provide a platform for younger voices to be heard in decision-making. These boards should have a clear mandate, regular meetings, and opportunities for youth to propose and implement initiatives.

Education and Outreach

Develop educational programs and outreach initiatives that inform and engage young citizens on climate change, technology, and DEI.

Mentorship Programs

Pair young leaders with experienced mentors within local government to help them navigate the complexities of governance and advocacy.

Inclusive Policy Development

Involve young people in creating policies that directly affect them, ensuring their perspectives are considered.

Recognition and Celebration

It's not just about supporting youth engagement but also about celebrating their achievements and contributions to the community. By doing so, we reinforce their sense of agency and belonging, inspiring and motivating others to follow their lead.

Conclusion

Change is not always easy, but it is essential for progress. Young people are stepping forward with fresh perspectives, energy, and a desire to shape a brighter future. As planners and local government officials, we must actively support their efforts to bring about meaningful change in our communities. The benefits of youth engagement for local governance are numerous, including increased diversity of ideas, improved community relations, and a more sustainable future.

By embracing their passion for climate action, tech-savvy skills, and commitment to DEI, we can work together to create a more inclusive, sustainable, and vibrant future for all. Let us empower the leaders of tomorrow today. I encourage you, as local government officials and planners, to take the first step in implementing these strategies in your communities. Together, we can make a difference.

Thanks for this, Sheila! City of Overland Park has a teen council and I think we are moving in the right direction from just educating the teens to allowing them to advise us. One of our teen council members is co-chair of our current parks long-term planning effort and another teen was a speaker at our comprehensive plan adoption meeting (she was the BEST speaker, incidentally).
