Empowering the Next Generation of Construction Professionals

Empowering the Next Generation of Construction Professionals

Granite is dedicated to developing the next generation of construction professionals. One way we support future construction professionals is by providing interested students with opportunities to visit our job sites to get a better sense of a career in construction. As part of this effort, we recently hosted students from the Aptos High School CTE (Career Technical Education) Construction Pathways Program at our Highway 1 pedestrian overcrossing project in Santa Cruz, California.

The larger CTE program is the result of an effort by the local school district to reinvent and revitalize its career readiness program and is designed to give students hands-on experience in construction. The goal is to support the transition into in-demand, well-paying construction careers. Students in the program acquire valuable skills such as time management, civic engagement, safety, sustainability, and teamwork.

Nineteen students joined us on February 23, 2024. The Highway 1 pedestrian overcrossing is one portion of the reconstruction of the Highway 1 corridor between Santa Cruz and Capitola. The attending students experienced the scale of the $72 million project and a close-up look at one of the key features: a new pedestrian/bicycle bridge that will support alternative mobility in the region.

Several Granite, Union, and subcontractor representatives spoke to the students about the project and the industry. The unifying theme of the speakers was the sense of pride derived from being part of building these essential projects that are relied on by so many people. They also shared their enthusiasm at the chance to speak to interested students. The CTE Construction Pathways Program is a fantastic way to expose students to the construction industry and give them real-world experience.

At Granite, we believe that investing in the next generation of construction professionals is vital for the future of our industry. Hosting students on actual job sites exposes them to the construction industry and equips them with the skills they need to excel. It is a powerful way to connect students to the exciting potential of a construction career.
