John Paul Construction Journey: Meet Ross Nicoll

John Paul Construction Journey: Meet Ross Nicoll

We spoke to Ross Nicoll, Site Engineer about his experience working with us, the diverse nature of his role and his experience completing our Graduate Development Programme. Ross’s performance on the programme was recently acknowledged with an award, recognising him as the highest performing graduate of his cohort.

Ross’s journey with John Paul Construction started in 2018, when he joined us for his five-month college placement as a Civil Engineering student.  This experience provided Ross with valuable insights into the construction side of engineering and ultimately influenced his decision to pursue the graduate programme with John Paul, following the successful completion of his studies.

Over the course of his five years with us, Ross has gained experience in a multitude of specialist areas. Firstly, on the construction of the RC frame element of the award-winning National Rehabilitation Hospital, before moving onto a 30,000m2 beverage concentrate production facility. His next 18 months were spent with our mission critical team on the design and build construction of a new 2-storey data centre in Dublin. Ross is now working on one of John Paul Construction’s largest projects, the upgrade of Rosslare Europort, a significant project combining both building and civil engineering. This variety of experience has given him a great understanding of the various areas within the construction industry and has exposed him to many differing construction techniques, forming a fantastic base from which to go on in his career.

There are two sides to Ross’s role. On one hand, he is focused on getting the details of the design and understanding all aspects of the build on a project. On the other, he enjoys the lively atmosphere and fact paced nature that comes with helping the subcontractors to ensure the job is complete. This daily variety that comes with working in the construction industry, is one of the things Ross finds most enjoyable about his role.

Ross notes that John Paul Construction’s diverse and multicultural workforce brings together a mix of personalities on site. This, in turn creates an enjoyable atmosphere for the entire team. Despite working on many different projects, Ross finds the comradery and the “craic” remains a constant across them all.

Ross’s journey so far has been one of great success and growth and we look forward to seeing what he achieves next.
