Empowering Women at Rakuten Asia: Initiatives That Make A Difference

On International Women's Day, we celebrate the achievements of women around the world and acknowledge the vital role they play in driving progress and innovation. At Rakuten Asia, we are firmly committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment where women can thrive.

Creating Pathways

We are proud to offer a range of initiatives designed to empower and support women in their careers, such as our mentorship programs that create pathways for women to reach their full potential, both within their current roles and in pursuing other careers. Access to mentorship programs for women can build their confidence and provide valuable guidance, advice, and recommendations for promotion. Striving for gender equity fosters diversity and inclusion, leading to more innovative solutions.

Providing Support

Additionally, we offer flexible work arrangements and parental leave policies to help women achieve their professional aspirations while maintaining a healthy work-life balance and support them through parenthood. Vanessa, Senior Manager of the Digital Sports Marketing Divisions at Rakuten says that, “In my private life, I am a mother of three kids in elementary school, which means that I took childcare leave for a total of three years. Thanks to the company’s support, I feel I am accomplishing a great deal and truly sense that this environment, which contains not only my family but also many others who support me, is carving out a shortcut to realizing my dreams.”

A research article done by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that 43% of women in STEM careers leave their full-time jobs within 4-7 years of having their first child or adopting. Recognising the difficulties in caregiving and its responsibilities, it is important that corporations do more to retain their working professionals. At Rakuten, we proudly share that 40.4% of our workforce is female, with 97% of mothers returning after childcare leave. By fostering an environment that prioritizes flexible work, paid family leave, and childcare support, we empower women to thrive.

Rakuten Asia’s Women in Project Management workshop brought together a dynamic group for learning and collaboration.

Space for Connection

Beyond these company-wide initiatives, we have several active Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) dedicated to supporting women and parents. These groups provide a space for connection and professional development. Our Women's ERG regularly hosts workshops on various topics like self-actualization and career development, while our Working Parents ERG offers support and resources for managing the unique challenges of balancing work and family life.

Being an Ally

We recognize the importance of allyship in creating a truly inclusive environment. Through allyship workshops, we equip all employees with the knowledge and skills to challenge biased behaviors and actively support their women colleagues. As Fergal Downey, Regional VP of Rakuten Blockchain Lab, emphasizes, engaging men in these conversations is crucial. His personal participation in discussions raised awareness of unconscious bias and its impact, significantly contributing to Rakuten's ongoing journey towards a more gender-equal workplace.

At Rakuten Asia, we are inspired by the countless women who contribute their talent, dedication, and leadership every day. We are committed to fostering an environment where all individuals, regardless of gender, can reach their full potential. Join us in celebrating International Women's Day!
