Enduring Hittite Matrilineality

Jerusalem (Hebrew: Yerushalayim; Arabic: Al‑Quds) is a city in Western Asia. Situated on a plateau in the Judaean Mountains between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea, it is one of the oldest cities in the world and is considered to be a holy city for the three major Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Both Israelis and Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital, as Israel maintains its primary governmental institutions there and the State of Palestine ultimately foresees it as its seat of power. To-date, the status of Jerusalem remains one of the core issues in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Because of this dispute, neither claim is widely recognized internationally.

Ezekiel or Ezechiel (Jerusalem, circa 622–570 BC), is the central protagonist of the ‘Book of Ezekiel’ in the Hebrew Bible. In Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, Ezekiel is acknowledged as a Hebrew Prophet.

As in Christianity, and Islam, the foundation of religious authority in Judaism rests upon God's will. There is neither higher nor other authority. God's will reaches worldly expression in the Torah. Those who teach the Torah authoritatively speak in God's name and convey God's word.

“Thus says the Lord GOD to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite, and your mother a Hittite.” (Ezekiel 16:3 NRSV)

To this end, according to traditional Jewish law, a person's Jewish status is passed down through the mother. Rabbis perceived the mother as the dominant, emotional parental resource for their children. Although, some people say that Judaism goes by matrilineal descent because we always know who a person's mother is, and we don't always know who a person's father is.

The 'Shulchan Aruch' (Code of Jewish Law) states that a child of a Jewish mother is a Jew, regardless of the father's lineage.

The 'Mishnah' (Oral Torah) states that the offspring of a Jewish mother and a non-Jewish father is recognized as a Jew.

Some Hasidic Jewish groups even propose that matrilineality and matriarchy within Judaism are related to the metaphysical concept of the Jewish soul.

Matrilineality or matriline, is a line of descent from a female ancestor to a descendant, in which, the subject in all intervening generations are mothers, in other words, a "mother line".

Therefore, in the matrilineal descent system, a descendant is considered to belong unequivocally to the same descent group as their mother, whereby, lineage and inheritance are traced through a group's female members and children are part of their mother's kinship group.
