Are you a med SLP who does modified barium swallow studies and a radiologist has disagreed with you on any of the following: Esophageal Sweep, AP View, Frame rate or Pulse Rate, NOT ending the study as soon as a patient aspirates, or Going beyond 5 minutes of fluoroscopy time…

You’re not alone! I’m here to talk about 3 of the most common barriers between radiologists and SLPs and what YOU can do about it. You’ll want to stick around for number 3- it’s the most challenging barrier of them all.

Yes! Going beyond 5 minutes is like a sin, and it’s always frustrated me. If it’s necessary then we need more time!

Excellent!!! I have asked the radiologists I work with to think about the “why’” of aspiration and it has made a difference. The patient in many if not most instances know they are experiencing aspiration. The come to us for answers to their question “Why” and how can they prevent further occurring episodes. They want answers. SLP “…we discovered that you aspirated furing the study.“ Patient “Really? This is why I came to you. I already knew this. I want to know why and how can I treat this so I don’t aspirate any further!” SLP “We had to stop the study because you in fact aspirated.” Patient “…yes I know this but what’s the cause of the aspiration? This is what I want to know!”
