The Evolving Role of Physician Assistants (PAs) in Healthcare
Physician Assistants (PAs) in Modern Healthcare
Physician Assistants (PAs) are evolving in healthcare, handling tasks that were once done only by physicians. Over the years, their duties have expanded, especially in response to physician shortages and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. PAs can work in many areas of healthcare, making them key players in meeting today’s needs.
The Growing Demand for PAs
There is a serious shortage of healthcare workers in the U.S., with predictions of up to 86,000 fewer physicians by 2036 (AAMC). To fill these gaps, healthcare systems are relying more on PAs to provide care, especially in areas that need more medical services.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, PAs played an important role in helping overwhelmed hospitals. They worked in emergency rooms, intensive care units, and testing centers. Their help was critical during one of the toughest times in healthcare (American Hospital Association).
