The expansion of power grids and offshore connection systems requires efficient cable manufacturers
We were delighted to host Deputy Premier and Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy of the State of North Rhine Westphalia Mona Neubaur at our high-voltage cable factory in Cologne yesterday.
“The transition to sustainable energy production needs an efficient energy infrastructure. The expansion of power grids and offshore connection systems requires efficient cable manufacturers. NKT is the largest cable factory in Germany and a supplier of innovative energy cable technology. I am delighted that NKT received a major contract for further cable systems in North Rhine-Westphalia from transmission system operator Amprion in March and has announced plans to expand the Cologne site. This is an important step towards ensuring that the added value associated with the restructuring of the energy infrastructure also takes place here and that new industrial jobs are created here,” says Mona Neubaur, minister of The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
“It was a pleasure to talk with Mona Neubaur about the benefits of underground long-distance energy transmission, the needs for expanding the European electricity grid to support the transition to renewable energy, and how NKT is dedicated to innovation and investments in German capabilities” says Lukas Sidler , EVP, Solutions Cologne, who lead the tour around the factory.
NKT has achieved success in the second wave of the German ‘Energiewende’. The company has been awarded several on- and offshore projects in 2023 and the first quarter of 2024, responding to the demand from German transmission system operators (TSOs). Through significant ongoing investments in production and installation capacity, NKT demonstrates its commitment and prepares to support the ambitious targets of the European grid transformation both onshore and offshore, at a large scale.
The NKT Cologne site is currently manufacturing and delivering more than 1200km of high-voltage land cables which will be installed in projects such as SuedOstLink and SuedLink. The power cables will transport renewable energy from the North Sea to southern Germany.
High voltage DC (Direct Current) cables are ideal for efficient, long-distance power transmission and advantageous for densely populated, or environmentally sensitive areas. The 525 kV XLPE HVDC cable technology is being implemented in the German corridor projects as the first of its kind in the world.
