Exploring the Evolution and Applications of Neuro Management
Abstract
Neuro management emerges as a prominent and beneficial tool that belongs to the neuroscience domain to improve management and organizational outcomes. It has the potential to revolutionize managerial outcomes through wise decision-making based on brain and nervous system monitoring. In this study, the vitality of micromanagement is explored through extensive analysis and critique of literature and how it plays a pivotal role in leveraging leadership and marketing outcomes. Many scholars advocate for its widespread adoption to improve managerial outcomes and team cohesion. However, others also argue about its ethical challenges and limitations by focusing on further research on the topic to foster a better understanding of neuroscience principles. This study’s discussion concludes that Neuro management is crucial for improving team performance and managerial effectiveness. However, it requires the collaboration of researchers and managers to comprehend its challenges to efficiently adopt it in practical environments.

Introduction
Since global economic trends and entrepreneurship practices are evolving rapidly in the 21st century, due to the rapid digital revolution and advancement of neuroscience, managers and business leaders have felt a pressing need to transform their environments in complex circumstances (Gheerawo et al., 2020). Global business organizations are facing several problems and challenges such as employee motivation, conflict resolution, and change management (Frömer & Shenhav, 2022). Managers are often discovering innovative methods to gain sustainable competitive advantages. However, given the lack of resources and knowledge of psychology and neuroscience, most leaders and organizational managers in the digital age fail to analyze their employees from a diverse perspective (Rotolo et al., 2018). Therefore, a new vision was presented by Neuro management to enable business organizations to make better decisions and foster team development.
Neuro management stands as a relatively new interdisciplinary domain that combines the concepts and knowledge of both management and neuroscience to foster business managers, organizations, and their professional behaviors (Heydari, 2020). Researchers have started covering micromanagement as a vital subject that deals with strategies to manage people and teams by integrating Neuro management concepts and principles. Neuro management is a combination of neuroscience principles and an understanding of brain functions to foster management practices of business leaders and entrepreneurs (Halkiopoulos, 2022). Using simple rules of neurobiology, managers can use a range of principles to improve team performance by incorporating neuro-leadership (Clements et al., 2021).
Neuro management is applicable in a wide range of business activities and endeavors (Sharma, 2020). Researchers reveal that the application of Neuro management is beneficial for several business domains such as management training, leadership development, team building, human resource development, marketing dynamics, and industrial engineering (Gheerawo & Flory, 2020). This knowledge will allow managers to observe the intrinsic motivations of employees by integrating neural processes.
Researchers and business leaders are taking immense interest in the understanding and implementation of Neuro management techniques and processes to enhance the cognitive abilities of human resources to improve business and productivity outcomes (Misra, 2016; Arce et al., 2020). However, despite a broad spectrum of knowledge and hype for integrating knowledge of neuroscience within the competitive business world, there are many challenges faced by business executives to ensure its smooth application. In business settings across the globe, a serious problem lies in the comprehension of this highly indispensable subject of Neuro management that has deeper roots in neuroscience to effectively incorporate its principles into business management and leadership endeavors and actions (Halkiopoulos, 2022). Therefore, business leaders need robust strategies and enhanced learning to reduce their skepticism about the application and effectiveness of Neuro management in wider organizational settings.
Neuro management has not been much studied being a new discipline. For example, the study by Heydari (2020) discusses the impact of cognition on neuro entrepreneurship. Similarly, Ismajli & Ziberi (2022) discuss the impact of neuromarketing on consumer behavior. However, none of these and other studies critically analyze the principles, application in business settings, benefits, and challenges of Neuro management to improve the outcomes of managers and organizational leaders. This study fulfills the aim of addressing these knowledge gaps in previously published studies in the domain of Neuro management and covers ethical challenges and limitations for its widespread adoption in organizational settings to boost the personal coherence of managers and employees.
What is Neuro management and its evolution
Neuro management research was first introduced in Zhejiang University in 2006. The roots of Neuro management come from a range of psychological and neuroscience domains such as decision neuroscience and neuroeconomics (Juárez-Varón, 2020). Neuro management has deeper roots in the knowledge developed by neuroscientists and psychology experts (Schwartz et al., 2016). It has been incorporated into management, industrial engineering, marketing, and leadership lately to improve the diverse leadership of global entrepreneurs. The main inspiration for Neuro management comes from cognitive neuroscience (Isaac & Isaac, 2022). This means that it has a relation with the emotional behavior, social attitude, and cognitive ability of employees.
Since business organizations are seeking employee satisfaction and alignment of management policies with their well-being, the role of Neuro management is crucial to forming an inclusive work culture to improve the performance of teams (Medina-Vicent, 2019). Using simple rules of neurobiology, managers can use a range of principles to improve team performance by incorporating neuro-leadership (Clements et al., 2021). For example, managers can use neuro-leadership principles and form belief systems that foster performance and autonomy. Using this approach, organizational leaders can set new criteria for paying wages, establishing authority, and ensuring the intrinsic motivation of employees. Therefore, the goal of neuro management is to comprehend and improve organizational behavior in the long run to foster good decisions (Garcia, 2021).
The incorporation of new knowledge of Neuro management in business organizations can help to solve challenges faced by managers in the new millennium. This knowledge has been proven to be crucial by opening new doors to possibilities. Therefore, managers need this knowledge and approach in the complex business environment to incorporate neuroscience research into their daily decision-making and reduce the inefficiencies of conventional management practices to form dynamic organizations (Clements et al., 2021).
Marketing and management professionals have long strived to improve teamwork and productivity through conventional methods. They faced several challenges in collecting data from emotional participants and obtained wrong information. However, over the past two decades, significant advancements in neuroscience have revolutionized the field of neuro-marketing by fostering decision-making. In more recent years, management science advancements have also led to the integration of neuroscience research into management practices. Nowadays, more research has led to the exploration of the human brain at a molecular level to enhance the attitude of workers and employers to foster business growth (Ismajli & Ziberi, 2022).
Neuro management has also emerged and evolved in the past decade with increased research in economics, marketing, and management domains. In recent years, for example, scholars have made efforts to explore neuro-leadership, neuro entrepreneurship, and neuro-marketing. This has evolved Neuro management subject with a global and easy access to wider knowledge with more possibilities of adopting it in business management spheres (Heydari, 2020). Hence, the growth and implementation of Neuro management has resulted and will continue to result in a paradigm shift in the thinking of global managers.
Key benefits and applications of Neuro Management
Why Neuro Management is Useful for Modern Businesses?
In the domain of organizational behavior (OB), micromanagement ensures that leaders play their roles more effectively and show diligent performance and skill (García, 2021). Neuro management is crucially helpful for global businesses and leaders to highly motivate and supercharge their employees to foster productivity and team resilience. In today’s complex business organizations, the utilization of Neuro management principles and scientific techniques can integrate scientific information with business processes and team-building strategies to enhance the behavior of teams to foster bonds (Frömer, 2022). For instance, through the incorporation of neuro-leadership, organizations can foster effective leaders by incorporating neuroscience principles to motivate employees. Leaders can enhance their cognition and empathetic behavior to form inclusive cultures. This means that Neuro management can impact the behaviors of teams and individuals in business organizations globally and improve the level of their cognition by incorporating scientific principles and knowledge to boost organizational resilience (Clements, 2021).
Better Comprehension and Comprehension of Employees’ Thinking
According to Alsmadi & Hailat (2021), the biggest benefit of Neuro management is the exploration of the brain that makes most decisions. This means that this knowledge can assist leaders in understanding complex issues and team conflicts (Misra, 2016).
Similarly, another benefit of neuro management has been discussed by Platt (2020) who claims that it can be a great help for supervisors to improve their managerial skills. It allows managers to identify team conflicts and utilize logical information to resolve them (Zmigrod, 2021). Moreover, Healey (2018) explains that managers can use neuro management to understand what is going on in employees’ brains. This way, they can improve their leadership endeavors.
Enhanced Diversity
Neuro management is beneficial for organizational settings because managers can create a stress-free environment with its implementation (Oberholzer, 2014). For instance, supervisors can get a clear picture of employees’ feelings and emotions working from home. During the pandemic and even in normal circumstances, this tool can help managers improve the efficiency of remote employees (Waldman & Balthazard, 2015). Hence, it leads to better motivation and engagement.
Besides, scholars have been discussing these principles because it is crucial for developing an innovative culture in organizations. For example, by using neuro entrepreneurship knowledge in business and management settings, managers can get a glimpse of the personality characteristics of teams to foster creativity. This leads to the welfare of business firms that improves the well-being of employees (Struchiner & De Almeida, 2020). Hence, neuro management has emerged as an important weapon for business marketers and marketing managers to comprehend the behavior of consumers and employees (Zak, 2017). Furthermore, using the knowledge of neural activity, marketing staff and directors can enhance their performance by making better marketing decisions (Ramachandran, 2021). This means they can plan their advertising and social media campaigns in an innovative manner using this knowledge to look inside customers’ brains (Naim, 2023).
Enhance Productivity, Motivation, and Well-being
Researchers suggest that employees who are heard and understood well by managers can produce better results. For example, using the knowledge of “matrix management,” the understanding and support of Neuro management can be enhanced in organizational settings (Ginter et al., 2018). This can help managers to listen to their employees effectively and foster a way to improve communication between teams (Moss, 2021). As a consequence, employees will develop a benevolent feeling to foster their productivity. Moreover, managers can use matrix management and Neuro management to positively influence the whole production unit and create a truly cohesive workplace environment (Takatoshi, 2019). This means leaders can effectively ensure employees’ well-being by developing the knowledge of mirror neurons and solving psychological problems such as burnout, stress, anxiety, depression, de-motivation, and workplace dissatisfaction (Opris et al., 2021).
Contributions to Management Practices
Through the implementation of Neuro management, managers can ensure using evidence-based management processes and offer better services by incorporating cognitive practices to change employees’ behavior (Moutoussis et al,. 2021). For example, neuroscientific mechanisms can be used such as magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to comprehend the function of the human brain that links to important organizational outcomes (Moss, 2021). According to Misra (2016), micromanagement can help managers adopt the best styles in their unique business settings and remain at the top of problem-solving. This implies that all business managers and leaders need comprehensive learning of Neuro management principles to foster emotional intelligence and improve their communication with team members (Neuromanagement Neuroscience, 2021).
Another research reveals the application of Neuro management in management practices. For example, the study by Massaro (2023) reveals that the role of a neuro-manager can help to improve the productivity and behavior of an angry team member. Managers can engage in effective communication with angry employees and ask them why they are angry. Neuro management can help them understand the emotions of their employees to satisfy their underlying needs. Also, managers can encourage team members better to speak in team meetings if they have a thorough understanding of their feelings and psychological motives. Hence, Neuro management can help management professionals to remain proactive in organizational settings to remove bottlenecks that hinder teamwork (Naranjo-Gil, 2011).
Limitations and Challenges
Neuro management application despite its enormous advantage for business organizations and leaders comes with a few challenges (Manageris. 2008). For instance, there are ethical issues and limitations of applying neuroscientific principles in practical business environments. Some skeptics believe Neuro management research has low reliability and validity which hinders the global adoption of this principle (Korpysa, 2020). Since the human brain functions in a complex manner and the attitudes of humans are never predictable. Professional managers cannot use Neuro management principles to accurately predict the behaviors of employees (Fisher et al., 2010). Therefore, in management activities, it is vital to understand the fundamental needs of team members from a neuroscience perspective to ensure its widespread adoption (Kiran & Prabhakar, 2021).
Moreover, research published on Neuro management in many journals often lacks a larger sample size that is vital for producing reliable findings. Several publications completed on this subject fall short of the recommended sample size (Juárez-Varón, 2020). Moreover, an article published by MIT Sloan argues the application of neuro-marketing is questionable when researchers utilize brain data and imaging to enhance marketing decisions (Horvath, 2022). Hence, it is evident that researchers can make educated guesses while using neuro-marketing but cannot prove the reliability and validity of data. Finally, this tool can promise to improve employees' well-being and decision-making, but it also highlights a few ethical problems to limit its use in business management. For instance, a serious ethical dilemma includes the lack of privacy of workers and freedom due to extensive monitoring of their brain activities (Issac & Issac, 2020). This means organizations may suffer due to a lack of well-defined employee autonomy rights (Haskett , 2014)).
Discussion
Neuro management is a relatively new tool for management professionals to foster teamwork and productivity (Mendoza et al., 2023). However, the literature analysis claims that it comes with several complexities. Neuro management’s adoption into organizational management and leadership requires a deeper collaboration and consensus of neuroscientists, organizational managers, and management researchers to mitigate its challenges. Moreover, there is a need to focus on empirical validation of data to effectively predict the behavior of employees. This is backed by the study conducted by Ismajli & Ziberi (2022) who claim that from the perspective of business management, including objective information can help to reduce ambiguity in research and incorporate neuroscience to build processing frameworks to effectively predict individual behaviors (Erkal, n.d).
Moreover, the literature review also reveals several benefits of integrating euro management into organizational endeavors. However, it requires the attention of researchers to fully comprehend its impact on teams and individuals and their attitudes (Heydari, 2020). For example, before monitoring the brain of employees, managers must obtain their consent and permission (Halkiopoulos, 2022). Employees not aware of brain monitoring may feel agitated without informed consent. Therefore, to reap all the benefits of Neuro management in a business setting, leaders must follow ethical principles of fairness, respect for every individual, and their right to self-determination (Cortez, 2023).
Furthermore, other scholars confirm that there are several opportunities for business domains by incorporating principles of Neuro management (Gheerawo & Flory, 2020). Also, Garcia (2021) argues that leadership development and team dynamics are complex nowadays and they can be enhanced by incorporating Neuro management awareness. This is because it can improve employees' resilience by knowing their cognitive processes in the brain, hence, allowing team leaders to resolve conflicts and enhance decision-making (Balconi, 2021).
Moreover, the literature review also supports the promotion of the emotional intelligence of managers as a result of Neuro management integration. This is backed by the studies by Frömer & Shenhav (2022) who claim that Neuro management can facilitate emotional intelligence among managers and subordinates. This can lead to better involvement of team members by focusing on their well-being. This way, researchers are confirming that neuro entrepreneurship and management are crucial for today’s managers to foster innovation and diversity (Clements et al., 2021). Therefore, there is a need to address skepticism surrounding its widespread application to ensure optimal utilization.
Finally, even though researchers in the literature review claim that Neuro management is beneficial for improving motivation, managers can still face challenges regarding the reliability of neuroscientific information. If managers interpret this data inaccurately, they may apply neurological findings wrongly. Therefore, in the context of neuro-marketing, its application is still debatable despite its potential to understand consumers’ behavior (Alsmadi & Hailat, 2021). This can lead to reduced motivation of employees (BALCONI , 2019).
Conclusion and the Way Forward
The study covered several benefits, opportunities, and challenges of utilizing Neuro management in business organizations that have an immense potential to transform leadership practices and employee behaviors. However, the discussion reveals that several researchers still suggest further exploration of this principle to ensure its effective implementation due to challenges faced by managers. The skepticism should not be left unaddressed as researchers require collaboration to foster this knowledge into global management practices. Therefore, moving into the future with Neuro management as a crucial part of business environments requires more empirical findings to back its reliability. Indeed, this tool can empower managers globally to unlock the fullest potential of their teams to build innovative cultures.
