FAMILY REUNION II-ANNA MAE vs MILLIE ROSE (c)2024 wdlewisSr

“Hello, Anna Mae!” Millie identified her sister from the caller ID. “Your boys came by to see me, looking for a job!”

“Why didn’t you give them a job, Millie?” Anna Mae asked annoyingly. “You know they just got out of prison. If they can’t turn to family when they need to turn their lives around, who do you think they’re going to turn to next, Millie? The drug dealers?”

“First of all, Anna Mae, how are you doing?” Millie responded courteously. “Are you taking your radiation treatment like the doctor ordered?”

“I’m fine, but that’s not why I called you,” Anna Mae said defensively. “Porter and Parker aren’t going to have me around for much longer. I need to know that they can depend on family like you when I’m gone!”

“Anna Mae, first of all, those boys are grown-ass men,” Millie reminded her. “Maybe one of them is slower than the other, but they got each other. Somebody is going to hire them sooner or later, just not me.”

“Is this about the time they stole your car?” Anna Mae tried to reason with Millie. “I’m sorry I acted the way that I did, but you didn’t have to call the police on them! You know they had your car, Millie. That wasn’t really auto theft if you know who has your car, Millie!”

“First of all, Anna Mae, you bring this up every time we talk. I told you I didn’t know your boys had my car. Secondly, even if I knew who they my car, I was responsible if they killed anybody. You will never admit it, but your boys have often been a little misguided with other people's property.”

“They brought your car back, Millie! Not a scratch on your pretty little foreign car!” Anna Mae was quick to point out.

“Anna Mae!” Millie took a deep breath. “Just listen to yourself! You are constantly defending them when they are putting you at risk! You can't afford all of this stress!”

“ If you would give them a job in one of your many apartment houses, they could be responsible and not get in trouble, Millie. You could help them out with all that money you got!”

“Anna Mae, there is no reasoning with you. I can’t do this!” Millie hesitated. “I will talk to you later.”

“No, you won’t Millie Duvosia!” Anna either intently or erroneously called Millie by the wrong last name. “If you don’t want to help me and my boys out, especially while I’m fighting this breast cancer, then, what good are you for?”

“What?” Millie got upset. “Have you forgotten that I pay for your radiation and chemo treatment? Who pays for your transportation to Texas once a month so you can get your treatment? Who in this family pays for your accommodations in Texas? What do you mean, ‘What good are you for?’”

“I knew you were going to bring that up!” Anna Mae screamed back at her. “You don’t have to do anything for me, Millie Rose! You don’t have to do a goddamn thing for me and my boys! I’ll take care of them my damned self! To hell with you, Millie! And don’t go pulling any more guns on my children, or you’ll regret it! I can call the police, too you know! You hear me, Millie Rose Duvokier?”

“I don’t know who their father was, Anna Mae," Millie said choosing her words slowly. "But those two demon seeds of yours are going to send you to an early grave,” Millie warned her. “If you are tired of me, I’m tired of you too. Maybe I need to treat you like a tenant and give you a 30-day notice.”

“Evict me? Your own sister?” Anna Mae cried. “I’m glad I’m not one of your raggedy-ass tenants ‘cause you are a mean old witch!”  Before Millie could come back with a reply: "‘BAAM’! Anna Mae slammed the phone on her.
