In business today, people judge us immediately based on how we are dressed, before we even get to say one word. Unfair? Totally! I run my own soft skills corporate training business here in Japan. Now if we can positively influence that initial judgement of us, shouldn't we make an effort to control it? Every day I carefully choose my clothes to determine that critical first impression people will have of me, based on who my schedule says I will encounter that day. What do you do?

Know The Rule To Break The Rule: Classic Men's Wear Conventions

20.   Buy a home trouser pressing machine. I got the Corby 3300. When you get home, press your trousers to restore the front and rear trouser creases. After pressing, hang the trousers vertical if possible using a clip, rather than folding them.

This day I had my speech at the Shereton Grand Hiroshoma Hotel to thirty executives of a famous multinational company. I wanted to look professional , so I chose my dark grey glen check Ermenegildo Zegna Tindari suit.

Actually, this is the same suit I was wearing the day before in Tokyo, when I did my Japan's Top Business Interviews podcast with Michael Witt, CEO of Nicole Racing Japan. I chose it because the Zegna Tindari fabric is designed to travel well and be create resistant. This saved me the trouble of lugging a second suit eight hours on the Shinkansen, down and back from Hiroshima.

The dark grey suit was double breasted, with peak lapels, side vents, a Barchetta breast pocket, flap pockets, double pleats, 35mm double cuffs and I wore over the calf grey socks.

The white shirt, which is obligatory when teaching or presenting, was from Australian shirtmaker Abelard 1922 with French Cuffs. The cufflinks were blue and white from Barneys New York to match in with the blue and white basketweave tie from Kirby Allison, tied in a double Windsor knot.

Originally I had picked out a different tie, but I saw Kirby wearing his black and white basketweave tie in one of his recent videos, I thought it looked sharp, so I changed any mind and went for this one.

The blue linen pocket square from Barneys New York was in a reverse puff, held firmly in place with my Kuska Fabric 1936 stabiliser.

When speaking or teaching, the suit, tie and pocket square have to be toned down, so as not to compete with our face. We don’t want to be competing with our message with self-created distractions.

The silver corporate badge from Dale Carnegie, the pen was my black and gold Mont Blanc, the business card holder from Lanvin, the watch my vintage gold 24m Cartier Tank Francaise with a black nubuck alligator strap.

The high shine black shoes were Pollini Derby’s with some brogueing on the medallion.
