FemTech: The Growing Sector Transforming Women's Health
In 2018, FERTI·LILY was established in the Netherlands with the support of Dr. Grada van den Dool, Chairwoman of the Association of Fertility Doctors in the Netherlands, and Dr. Maarten Wiegerinck, a leading fertility specialist in Europe. Their first product, the FERTILITY Conception Cup, facilitates conception at home and increases the likelihood of pregnancy without sacrificing intimacy or romance, and without the need for medical intervention or invasive procedures.
According to the company, this conception cup, inserted after sex, helps up to 300% more sperm cells reach the protective environment of the cervix, increasing the likelihood of sperm entering the uterus. The FERTILILY Cup is placed in the vagina post-ejaculation, pushing semen towards the cervix and cradling sperm in the cervical mucus. This allows more sperm cells to survive and ascend into the uterus, raising the chances of fertilization and conception.
They claim that the FERTI·LILY Conception Cup has been clinically proven to provide couples with a 48% higher chance of getting pregnant. The cup can be used for up to six cycles. This product falls under one of the fastest-growing medtech categories, known as FemTech
FemTech is a term coined by Clue founder Ida Tin in 2016 to describe products and services addressing conception, pregnancy, and contraception. The term helps legitimize women’s health as a subcategory of digital health. FemTech, or female technology, is a sector dedicated to developing technologies, products, and services specifically tailored to women’s health needs.
According to HealthTech, FemTech has expanded beyond female reproductive health to encompass a broader range of health issues. It now includes technology related to health conditions that affect women differently or disproportionately, such as autoimmune disorders, migraines, and cardiovascular disease.
For example, NextGen Jane is the maker of smart tampons. These health-focused tampons are designed to detect signs of health problems by analyzing cells in a user’s endometrial lining during her period. The company is currently recruiting beta testers to help identify the characteristics of a healthy versus an unhealthy menstrual cycle. Since the research involves multiple phases, there is also an online study component where participants provide feedback about their menstrual cycles.
Femtech Market size was valued at around USD 35.5 billion in 2023 and is estimated to grow at 16% CAGR from 2024 to 2032.
Leading companies in the market, according to Betaboom, include:

Ovira
Many women endure period pain monthly, but Ovira aims to change that with its Noha device. This device adheres to a woman’s stomach or back and delivers gentle electrical stimulation, which feels like small vibrations. These pulses block pain signals that typically travel to the brain, offering quick relief. Noha is an FDA-approved device with a low risk of side effects and can be used frequently and for extended periods. While primarily intended for menstrual discomfort, it may also alleviate pain from conditions like pelvic inflammatory disease or fibroids.
DotLab
DotLab aims to revolutionize endometriosis detection with a simple blood test that measures biomarkers associated with all stages of the condition. The test is administered through a blood draw at a doctor’s office. In March 2021, DotLab began enrolling participants for a cohort study of individuals suspected to have endometriosis, with a goal of recruiting 750 women.

It is the first FDA-cleared birth control app that uses body temperature to determine fertility, rather than assuming a standard 28-day cycle. The app and thermometer-based method have a 93% effectiveness rate with typical use, which rises to 98% with perfect use. Natural Cycles also helps users when they decide to start a family, making it a viable option for those seeking a hormone-free contraceptive method.
