Finally a way to measure progress for the humanitarian sector
The CHS self-assessment tool, released today by the CHS Alliance is the first step organisations should take when committing to work in line with the 9 commitments of the CHS. The self-assessment tool provides guidance and advice for organisations going through such an exercise, as well as templates allowing them to collect information, document evidence, and present results.
At long last, aid organisations have a way to get a comprehensive picture of their performance on quality, accountability and people management, as well as a solid evidence basis to focus resources where they are most needed. After the exercise is repeated, organisations will also be able to measure progress and the impact of their capacity development efforts. When looking at sector level, the CHS Alliance will also be able to provide benchmarks for aid organisations, and let the aid sector know about the areas where most attention is needed to improve its performance. It seems straightforward, but believe it or not, this is the first time we have a tool that will do this for such a wide group of organisations, which collectively employs over 100'000 people.
