Finding Your Way: 5 Steps to Move Forward When You're Lost in Your Career

Don't beat yourself up if you're feeling lost in your career.

Feeling lost in your career is a common problem. I was "lost" for over twenty years until I decided to make a change.

I went on a journey to uncover who I am, which ultimately helped me change my life.

Transforming my life to now serving and coaching others to find their career confidence.

From my coaching, here are some common reasons why people find themselves feeling lost in their careers:

Lack of clarity or self-awareness

You don't clearly understand what you want to do, your strengths, or what lights you up. Finding a career path that truly resonates with you can be challenging without a clear sense of direction.

Fear of failure or taking risks

Fear of failure or taking risks can discourage people from pursuing their true career ambitions. They may feel more comfortable staying in a safe and familiar job, even if it doesn't align with their passions or goals.

Feeling stuck in a job or industry

People may feel stuck in a job or industry that they no longer find fulfilling but may not know how to pivot into a new career path. They may feel trapped by their current skills or experience or unsure of how to break into a new field

External pressure or expectations

External pressures, such as pressure from family, friends, or society to pursue a particular career path, can lead people to ignore their own passions and interests. They may feel like they must follow a certain path to succeed, even if it doesn't feel right for them.

Yes, I am lost, now so what? What do you suggest?

Let me share what I did that may help you get unstuck.

I will be frank - it will be challenging, difficult, uncomfortable and hard.

There are days when you will want to give up and revert back to that old life.

So your WHY has to be rock solid to get you through those days.

On the flip side, I know you are on the verge of greatness when you feel that way.

Because when we feel discomfort, that's when we enter the growth zone.


So, here are the 5 steps I took (and guided many to do):

1. Reflect on Your Values and Create a Vision

Start by understanding what truly matters to you. Reflect on your values, passions, and the kind of life you want to lead. Ask yourself: What do I want my career to stand for? Knowing your values will help you make intentional decisions and align your career with what matters most.

Next, create a vision for your ideal career and life. Picture where you want to be in 5 years. What kind of work are you doing? What does your day look like? What impact are you making? Crafting a clear vision helps set a direction and serves as a guiding light when facing tough choices or setbacks. When your work aligns with your core values and vision, you’ll feel more fulfilled and motivated to keep moving forward.

2. Identify Strengths and Transferable Skills

Often, we underestimate the skills we've built over time. Reflect on your career and life experiences to identify your strengths and skills that can be applied to different roles or industries. These "transferable skills" are valuable assets that can open up new opportunities. Don’t just focus on the technical skills—consider your problem-solving abilities, communication style, and adaptability. Knowing what you bring to the table builds confidence and provides a strong foundation for your next steps. Next, match them to your ideal jobs and assess your gaps.

3. Own Your Achievements

It's time to recognise your accomplishments and give yourself credit. Many of us are hesitant to celebrate our wins, but embracing your achievements, big or small, can change the way you see yourself. Take stock of your career highlights, projects you've excelled in, or any recognition you've received. Documenting these moments will boost your confidence and prepare you to showcase your value when networking or applying for new roles.

4. Build a Personal Brand and Network

Your personal brand is how you present yourself to the world—your skills, values, and what makes you unique. Start by refining your LinkedIn profile, updating your resume, and sharing content that reflects your interests and expertise. Don't stop there; connect with others who inspire you. Networking is not just about finding a new job—it's about building relationships and learning from others. Be proactive in seeking mentors, getting a coach, attending industry events, or joining professional groups.

5. Create Milestones or Stepping Stones to Reach Your Ultimate Goal

Setting a lofty career goal is fantastic but can also feel overwhelming. Break down your ultimate goal into smaller, manageable milestones. These stepping stones can be new skills you want to acquire, projects to complete, or people to connect with. Celebrate each achievement along the way, and remember that progress is still progress, no matter how small. This approach keeps you motivated and allows you to pivot if necessary.

What I will Tell my Younger Self

Feeling lost in your career can be challenging and frustrating, but it's important to remember that it's never too late to find direction and pursue a fulfilling career path.

By reconnecting with your passions, assessing your strengths, networking with industry professionals, setting goals, creating an action plan, and being open to new opportunities, you can move forward and find success in your career.

I would have asked my younger self to start rather than "put up" with my job for over twenty years, but I also realised that life is an adventure, and there is no straight line.

It can be hard to admit we are stuck or unhappy especially when we have worked hard to get where we are, and we are doing all the things people say will make us happy. Often we get comfortable too and making a change feels overwhelming and hard. But we only have this life right now, so unless we are willing to rise and figure out what will fulfill us in our life and career - and then take action accordingly- we will remain stuck and even unhappy Alice Cheng - Job Search Coach
