Must-Have Skills In A CV - Part 2
How do you stand out from a sea of CVs in this ultra-competitive job market? Let's focus on the skills. I've included the link below if you haven't read Part 1, where I focused on soft skills.
Part 2, I am going to spotlight technical skills.
Now, you might think technical skills are unique to a profession.
Yes, of course, there will be some that are.
I am focused on those that apply to any role and profession.
It also doesn't matter if you're applying for internal roles. The same principles apply.
That's because these skills are like McDonald's "Would You Like Fries With That?".
What do I mean?
When you buy a car...
The standard price comes with the basics.
But what if you upgrade some options for a little more price?
In my coaching, I also use this to explain to my coachees… that 90% of the CVs for a job application will look similar. To stand out, you need to offer value to the employer.
These "Options" come at no additional salary to the employer on that CV.
Adding a few more "Options" would help you negotiate a little more salary when you nail the offer (or not if you choose not to).
You will stand out by conveying these "Options" as a bonus.

We've never been taught how to write an effective CV in any course. I am not saying mine is the ultimate, as this document is subjective.
Everyone has an opinion on the format, length, content, and whether or not to have a photo.
So, I am leaning on my +24 years of corporate hiring experience as a leader AND +6 years of career coaching, getting 300+ 1:1 coachees results, with $3m+ pay rises.
Technical Skills to Highlight (No Matter What Profession!)
You must provide specific examples of proficiency when listing technical skills on your CV. Here's how you can effectively write each skill and provide context.
1. Data Analysis:
Explanation: The ability to collect, process, and interpret data to make informed business decisions. In any role, we are faced with data, and demonstrating you can use this skill to add value will be a superpower, no matter what profession.
Example: "Utilised Power BI and data analysis techniques to identify market trends and customer behaviour, recommending a sales online promotion leading to an increase in sales by $100K per month."
2. Project Management:
Explanation: The skill to plan, execute, and oversee projects to ensure they are completed on time, within scope, and within budget. These days, we are running projects continuously, and having this skill will help the team later on.
Example: "Led a cross-functional team to complete a major project in implementing a trade spend sales system under budget successfully and ahead of schedule using Agile methodologies, saving the project $50K."
3. Excel Proficiency:
Explanation: The ability to use Excel for various tasks such as data analysis, financial modelling, and reporting is a MUST in any role. We are using data all the time, so learning at least at an intermediate level will not only help you be efficient, but no need to rely on the Finance team!
Example: "Developed comprehensive financial models in Excel to understand the ROI of a consumer promotion that resulted in a sales uplift of 20% and margin by $50K"
4. Negotiation:
Explanation: You don't have to be in Sales to negotiate! We negotiate all the time, deadlines, project funding, and resources. The capability to negotiate in a way that benefits the organisation and you are critical in any role.
Example: "Negotiated the project resources for an IT integration project, which resulted in an additional two headcounts, resulting in earlier project delivery by 1 month."

5. Customer Relationship Management (CRM):
Explanation: Managing customer data and interactions to improve business relationships and customer retention is helpful. If you have the opportunity to support the front line and learn this skill, it's invaluable.
Example: "Managed CRM system to track customer interactions and sales performance, leading to a 30% improvement in customer retention rates."
6. Marketing Analytics:
Explanation: Understanding marketing, consumer trends, or what the market is doing is critical for operations, finance, supply chain, and sales. The practice of measuring, managing, and analysing marketing performance to maximise effectiveness and ROI is a superpower. Not only can you collaborate with Marketing, but you can also understand its impact on your department.
Example: "Collaborated with the Marketing Insights team to identify a blue-ocean space for our projects. Used this data to analyse the impact to the factory operations and raised a CPAEX to commence the strategy, with an estimated $20M in new revenue".
7. Financial Acumen:
Explanation: You don't need to be a savvy numbers person or be an Excel lover (gosh, I wasn't, and I was in Finance!); what you need is to understand key business drivers, KPIs (average sales, GM % Sales) and your own turf's key metrics. Once you know it, your superpower will be evaluating financial data to guide business decisions and strategies. Also, you can sense check Finances anytime and come across as financially savvy!
Example: "Conducted financial analysis, collaborated with Finance to understand capital investment, with cashflow and NPV to support investment decisions in a new line, leading to an approval of $10M investment approval, with potential of $50M in incremental sales."
8. Supply Chain Management:
Explanation: Understanding how the flow of goods and services works, including optimising operations and reducing costs, is another value-added skill. It's the backbone of any business.
Example: "Streamlined supply chain processes in the outbound setup, reducing lead times by 15% and cutting costs by $100K p.a."
9. Technical Writing:
Explanation: The ability to create clear and concise documentation such as manuals, reports, and training materials.
Example: "Initiated and documented detailed product manuals and training materials, enhancing user experience and reducing support calls by 20 per month."
10. Public Speaking:
Explanation: We communicate constantly. Effectively communicating ideas and information to an audience is critical to showcasing your influencing and leadership skills.
Example: "Delivered engaging presentations to stakeholders, effectively communicating project status and strategic initiatives, with positive feedback.".
What Would I Do Differently?
The first simple step is to open the CV.
I am not saying you need to have ALL these technical skills, but if you're not getting calls, then it's time to spice up your CV.
I wish I had known this 10 years ago in my corporate career. Then, I would have received different opportunities and learned how to be my own cheerleader internally.
Then, reflect on each role and consider the problems you've solved, the projects you've worked on, and how you delivered outcomes.
Then, you can write out the technical skills and lace them into each role.
I am not saying you should stuff ALL these skills into your CV. It has to be YOU.
The critical thing is to ensure you have "evidence" to show you have that soft skill and how you used the skill to drive QUANTIFIABLE outcomes.
