If at first, you don't succeed....
A quick reflection drawn from inspiration on my way to work today. In my previous career, as a teacher and Head of Languages, I used to teach a student, who was extremely gifted and would have excelled at French. However, it wasn’t “cool” to learn a language for this particular student. Having had high expectations for her to succeed, I never gave up praising her when she worked well. Hoping it would inspire her. Unfortunately, it never did....!
Fast-forward September through to December, I see this very student often on her way to school as I go to work, and I would always greet her with “Good morning” and a bright smile. To this very day, she never returns my greeting, instead smiles to herself and rolls her eyes!
One day my “Good Morning” persistence may pay off and she might say hello. Perhaps in the future, she may even remember back to her French lessons and wished she had worked harder. Maybe when she is exploring Paris or working in a role, which require a language?
Similar to application writing and sending countless resumes to organisations. Persistence is key! You might send off hundreds of applications, feeling like it is a pointless exercise and then suddenly when you have almost given up, you land a great role!
