Five Depeche Mode songs that can make you more effective communicator

Depeche Mode have always been a band with a level of depth, understanding and awareness that set them apart. A band that understands struggle - they seem in touch with their emotions and have a sense of vulnerability. These qualities are essential when communicating with others and are perfectly demonstrated in five songs that can help us become better communicators.

1) Walking in my shoes

Empathy is incredibly important in the communication process. There is no better way of understanding someone than placing yourself in their shoes. No song better explores the topic of empathy. With lyrics such as "before you come to any conclusion try walking in my shoes" it examines judgement and the role it can play in the communication process. Empathy is vital and is a cornerstone when attempting to build trust and meaningful relationships.

2) Personal Jesus

A song that illustrates the importance one person can be to another. Essentially the song is about being there for people- when they struggle or need help. Now it is impossible to be a personal Jesus for everyone but you can be a person that people choose to turn to. Someone that will listen and offer moral support - a person that people rely on and can turn to without judgement. Every company needs this person.

3) Enjoy the Silence

There are so many directions you could go with this song. One would be the importance of embracing silence and not feeling afraid or uncomfortable with long periods of quiet. At times it feels that we fill silence with trivial words just to end the uncomfortable silence. However these moments can be meaningful and should be embraced as it allows us to listen, process and focus on the person we are communicating with.

4) Policy of Truth

Being truthful improves communication, even in difficult moments. It creates an environment of transparency, built of factual evidence and allows you to become more reliable. The song explores the difficulty being truthful can pose and it's not always easy,  however it allows you to be your authentic self, that will gain peoples respect.

5) Never let me down again

A song which has many possible meanings but reliability is certainly a take away. When communicating, especially with someone new, reliability is so important as it creates credibility and trust. Not being reliable or letting people down is a sure way of damaging relationships and preventing meaningful communication.

How different their Music would of been had they not gotten rid of Vince Clarke. "Just can't get enough " one of the great Pop songs of the 80,s written by Vince Clarke. "Personal Jesus" is a great song
