Five tricks to instantly appear competent By Bannya Basu
Have you ever wondered why the smart and confident looking person in a group of people always grabs more attention than others? Yes, you’re right! They appear more competent than the lot. First impressions are the ones that last longer in others' minds and they form in a matter of seconds; making it extremely necessary to show your best self from the get-go. And mind that making a well-balanced first impression is not limited to professional but it embraces our personal endeavors as well. After all, who wants to appear less attractive on his/her first date?
To speak a little bit about myself, let me tell you that I am an Image Consultant and Soft Skill Facilitator and I have been working with clients for 9 years now. Let me share here about the five approaches that work as a magic potion and a quick fix for instant gratification.
Talking about professional meetings, when you’re in such meetings, be aware of several unconscious signals you send. They can range from how fast you speak to what you're wearing. And, yes, they can reveal clues to your intelligence and competence levels. If you’re also wanting to make your self-expression/first impression last longer, here’re a few clear heads-up for you.
Make eye contact
Always look into their eyes when you meet someone for the first time. When you do that, it adds to your persona. However, you need to be mindful about not doing it too much and keeping it a soft stare. As otherwise, it may send wrong signals. If you look into their eyes too aggressively it may show you wanting some sexual favour or your dissatisfaction with the person. When doing it fairly, it will reflect your self-confidence and help you overcome any self-doubt.
Talk impactfully
No wonder, confidence speaks volume. And so, speak confidently, pairing carefully chosen impactful words. Modulate your voice by putting the correct emphasis and pauses. The must-do tip is: Always avoid speaking too softly, repeating yourself, and cutting others off.
Take out those facial piercings
The more facial piercings a person has, the less intelligent they are considered in meetings. Remember, this is your first impression and the person has no other information about you. Higher numbers of facial piercings are always associated with extraversion and sensation-seeking. They are associated with a lack of intelligence. So, why not keep aside those piercing jewelleries for weekend adventures and make the business-oriented networking and meetings fruitful for self-success.
Dress your uniqueness

Whether you're meeting with one of your employees or your future prospects, you should always consider that what you wear and the colors you choose convey an unspoken message. Business people need to be mindful about their clothing, much like their body language; it communicates to clients.
Entrepreneurs often overlook the color of their clothing and especially they think corporate suits as unimportant. They don't realise how the color they choose to wear can have a dramatic effect on how they are perceived by others.
Pay attention to your posture
Think tall. Centre your upper body over your hips. It is always a good idea to keep your stomach tucked in while holding your shoulders back. If it helps, you may also imagine a string pulling your head upward. Stand evenly on both feet. And, did I mention, relax? And, do not stand while crossing your legs or feet as it may make you appear mousy.
Walk briskly with an easy stride. To look confident and comfortable in your skin, you should avoid fiddling of any kind like touching your face with your hands or striding to the right or left. When moving, usually less is more. Avoid unnecessary movements, as it may indicate nervousness, jitteriness or flightiness. Confident people are slower and more controlled with their movements.
Here’s the last thumb rule:
Always smile! Smiling shows you enjoy being with others. Your smile must be sincere and contagious.
