Freedom Agenda Is The Agenda To CloseRikers, NOW!
Have you ever heard of Freedom Agenda? Knowing this agency is a must if you are a New Yorker. Why is this so? New York is the number one incarceration capital in the world. For those who reside in New York, it is imperative to know that New Yorkers are in danger of incarceration due to adverse and aggressive criminal laws.
New York is depicted as a renowned country, a place to be or go to visit because the sites are phenomenal. Yes, indeed. The site of jails spread across New York's every borough is a clear indication of what tourist attractions New Yorkers should look forward to. Incarceration has become a theme park of sorts for the American government.
For instance, according to the Prison Policy Initiative, "U.S. prisons and jails incarcerate a disproportionate amount of people who have a current or past mental health problem, and facilities are not meeting the demand for treatment. Police are also often used to respond to mental health crises, despite their involvement frequently resulting in violence or incarceration." The fact of the matter is that the essentialness of incarceration is above that of care.
According to research data collected by the Prison Policy Initiative, "Racial discrimination in housing, sentencing, and policing frequently explains why data show stark disproportionalities in justice involvement for people of color, particularly Black people. The research below goes into more detail as to how — and why — people of color are overrepresented in jails, prisons, and non-carceral forms of punishment." The reality of prisons in the US falls under the banner of crime and punishment instead of crime and rehabilitation.
Freedom Agenda has an agenda to close Rikers Island for the sake of all New Yorkers. Incarceration above rehabilitation within a society that boasts of second changes is ironic. Freedom Agenda is an advocacy organization located in Manhattan leading the charge to close Rikers Island just like its predecessor JLUSA did before being converted into a community-building organization.
