From Avocation To Vocation; How I Turned My Hobby Into A Career

From Avocation To Vocation; How I Turned My Hobby Into A Career

We often hear that if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. But what does it really mean to turn a passion into a thriving career? I’m Mandy Nicholson, and I’ve experienced this transformation firsthand, evolving from someone with a hobby into a successful entrepreneur, coach, and creative mentor.

The Early Days: Nurturing a Passion

My story begins with a love for art and creativity. Like many, I indulged in my passion in the quiet moments between work and family life. Creativity wasn’t just a hobby for me; it was an essential part of who I am. Yet, for a long time, it remained just that—a hobby. The idea of making a living from my art seemed distant, even impossible.

The Turning Point: Recognising the Possibility

The turning point came when I realised that the skills and knowledge I had developed through years of creative exploration had real value. This wasn’t a sudden revelation, but rather a gradual understanding that my passion could be more than just a pastime. It could be a vocation.

I began to see the potential to not only create art but to build a business around it. I could share my experiences, help others unlock their creative potential, and guide them on their journey from avocation to vocation.

Building the Dream: The Birth of My Business

Turning a hobby into a career requires more than just passion—it demands strategy, resilience, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. For me, it meant investing in myself, acquiring new skills, and understanding the business side of creativity. It was about finding the balance between the artistic and the entrepreneurial.

The creation of The Art Bank and my coaching programs marked the realisation of this dream. They became platforms where I could merge my love for creativity with a desire to help others achieve their own dreams.

Lessons Learned: From Passion to Profit

The journey from avocation to vocation is not without its challenges. There were moments of self-doubt and fear, but these were outweighed by the rewards. Here are some key lessons I’ve learned along the way:

  1. Passion Needs a Plan: Loving what you do is essential, but it’s not enough. You need a strategy to turn your passion into a sustainable business.
  2. Embrace the Business Side: Creativity and business aren’t mutually exclusive. Understanding marketing, finance, and operations is crucial to success.
  3. Invest in Yourself: Continuous learning and personal development are vital. Whether it’s through formal education, mentorship, or self-study, never stop growing.
  4. Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who understand your journey. Community and mentorship can make all the difference.
  5. Persistence Pays Off: There will be obstacles, but resilience is key. Keep pushing forward, even when the path seems unclear.

Moving Forward: Empowering Others

Today, I am proud to say that I’ve turned my passion into a thriving business. But more than that, I’ve had the privilege of helping others do the same. Whether through my creative mastermind programs, VIP days at The Art Bank, or collaborative book projects, I’m committed to guiding others on their journey from avocation to vocation.

If you’re ready to take your passion to the next level, to turn your hobby into a career, I encourage you to take that first step. It’s not always easy, but with the right mindset and support, it’s absolutely possible.
