From Ground to Glory: Cengrs' Role in the Metro Transformation of Delhi

#ThrowbackThursday || Throwback memories are the gateway to refreshing the mind and re-living some of the interesting works done by the company in the past. 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝟯𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝘅 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀. Many of them helped us stand out of the crowd and be recognized as a geotechnical investigation company committed to quality work, ready to take up challenges, work out technically sound solutions, and come out a winner.

One memory that 𝗠𝗿. Sanjay Gupta and 𝗠𝗿. Ravi Sundaram would like to share here is of the first phase of the Delhi Metro project. Although we have had the opportunity to work on all the phases of this important project, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗵𝗶 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗵𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘆𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝘁 Cengrs Geotechnica Pvt. Ltd. .

Throwback images showing every iconic structure begins with a strong foundation. Here's a glimpse of where it all started

Cengrs was involved with the project right from its inception in 1997. We did the initial preliminary geotechnical investigation for the DPR through RITES followed by a detailed investigation along the metro alignment for the two packages, viz. MC1A which was constructed by KSHI (Kumagai-Skanska-HCC-Itochu) and MC1B which was constructed by IMCC (Dywidag-L&T, Samsung, and Ircon-Shimizu JV).

In addition to over 250 boreholes drilled along the alignment and pressuremeter tests at several locations, 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗿𝘀 had the opportunity to perform 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹-𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗺𝗽-𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 at Patel Chowk, New Delhi Station, and Delhi Main Station for 𝗜𝗠𝗖𝗖 and at Civil Lines Station for KSHI in the year 2001.

Deep excavation to nearly 20 m depth was planned at some of the metro station sites. The presence of groundwater at 4-5 m depth necessitated a thorough hydro-geological study of the area and evaluation of the aquifer parameters for a detailed and realistic design of the dewatering system. In view of the presence of existing buildings in the vicinity, it was necessary to control the drawdown in the zone beyond the excavation limits.

Aquifer pump-out test is an in-situ test used to determine hydraulic parameters such as drawdown-time relationships, transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, well storage coefficient, specific capacity, well efficiency, etc. Hydro-geologic parameters derived from the test averaged over the spatial zone of influence of the test, are used to develop a hydro-geological model to design the dewatering system.

While we conducted the tests in the alluvial soils as per the standard procedure, it was challenging to perform the test in alluvial soil under fractured rock. To address the challenge, two tests were conducted, one in the alluvium and the second in the rock after sealing off the inflow from the overlying alluvium. Thus, we assessed the hydraulic characteristics of both strata individually and worked out the overall drawdown to help the client develop guidelines for effective dewatering.

The result: A se3amless metro system connecting lives and cities built on a solid pictures

Looking back at this work we did about 23 years back, we feel proud that we contributed to the design of the dewatering system which resulted in the successful construction of these metro stations. A small step towards nation-building that changed forever the way the people of Delhi travel.

Very interestingly, 𝗠𝗿. Sorabh Gupta did some of his early work at Delhi Main station as a student just before leaving for his Master's in the US. A very effective training ground for someone who successfully built his career at Cengrs!!
