"From IC to Management and Back: My Unconventional Career Journey"
Transitioning between roles as an Individual Contributor (IC) and a manager is a journey filled with unique challenges and opportunities. My career path has taken me through both realms, offering valuable insights and experiences that have shaped my professional growth. My Journey
My first foray into management was at Amazon , where I had the privilege of building a Dream Team. Brian Miller thank YOU for your trust and leadership at that time and giving me a chance to be a part of your organization! However, when an opportunity arose to tackle one of the company's most challenging problems—hiring Senior Software Engineering talent—I decided to return to the IC realm. This move allowed me to influence a larger scope, partner with Senior Engineering Executive leaders, and impact multiple business groups at Amazon.
As an IC, I collaborated with some of the best recruiting professionals in the industry, including Amazon's SWAT team focused on Principal Engineering hiring. During this time, I met mentors who continue to guide me today. Special shoutout to Kristen Bailey for giving me the opportunity to join her group. Thank you, Kristen, for your support and leadership. This experience taught me that, in some cases, an IC can make a bigger impact than a leader. It's not always the case, but with the right role, it's absolutely possible. My next management role was at Meta. However, when I had the chance to return to my favorite company on the planet—Salesforce—I didn't hesitate to go back as an IC, even though there were no leadership roles available at the time. Joining the fantastic Security organization as their Recruiting partner, I found numerous opportunities to lead and influence. Rhonda Michalec forever honored and grateful to be a part of your team! Thank YOU for giving me the opportunity! I am truly a part of a Dream company and Team!
Looking back, whether in a leadership role or as an Individual Contributor, when you truly love what you do, you enjoy every day at work despite the setbacks. You know you're making a difference and building relationships with incredible professionals along the way.
