FROM A SOCIO-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE, WHAT PRESIDENT COULD POSSIBLY BE WORSE THAN DONALD TRUMP?
I wrote this in response to a question I often hear, and a comment I often see in social media, regarding who the worst president is in history, and "how far we've fallen". Sometimes, it is assumed that the upcoming president is often described as setting new standards for "lowness, incompetence and corruption". To be honest, I don’t know if this is true at all, but it does beg the more important question:
JUST WHO IS THE WORST PRESIDENT OF ALL TIME…AND WHY?
I cannot speak for others, but I can speak to research and myself. Like anyone and everyone, I have personal opinions and biases, but I'm also an educator and researcher, so in that regard, my opinion doesn't matter, the facts and the research do. In this article, I've presented information that supports my comments. Though this is not a peer reviewed article of empirical research, I present this commentary article with something to support my perspectives so that you will know that this isn't just how I feel, it's also based in fact something that has been lacking in thee headlines of late.
When this question came up in a recent conversation I was having with my friends and professional peers, most of them said, without hesitation…. “DONALD TRUMP”. I was not surprised by the answer, but I also didn’t respond with the answer they were expecting either. When they asked if I agreed with them, I said, also without hesitation…. “ANDREW JOHNSON”, the 17th president after Abraham Lincoln. My friends looked at me in amazement and asked me how I could ignore that actions of Trump over the past year. My response was…. "how can you ignore historical facts that support the outcome of the presidential legacy of Andrew Johnson?"
Donald Trump might be the worst president in RECENT HISTORY, but not necessarily the worse ever. As damaging as he may be, consider this concept; President Andrew Johnson and his cabinet may have been worse if you truly examine history. After the assassination of Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson became the president. It didn’t take long before he and his cabinet undermined all efforts to allow Blacks to have rights and opportunities for equality. Because of this, the south thwarted efforts for racial equality during the Reconstruction era. During this time and under his watch and presidency, the Black Codes, Pig Laws, and Jim Crow came into existence.
During this time between 1865 and 1875 ....lynching became a far more common threat to Blacks who were essentially relegated to the same jobs they had as slaves, which is why they worked as butlers, train porters, field hands, laborers, share-croppers, shoe shiners, stable hands, cooks, maids, and janitors for the next 100 years, and were discriminated and discouraged from attending college. This is the primary reason why Historically Black Colleges and Universities were developed in the first place (HBCUs).
Because of President Johnson, this era continued until the 1940's when president Harry Truman desegregated the military with Executive Order 9981 in 1948. Then we enter the 50’s, when in 1954 Thurgood Marshall headed Brown vs the Board of Education in order to end legal segregation in schools. Though not the first to do so, in 1955, Rosa Parks refused to gave up her seat on a bus and starting the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the same year that Dr. King received his doctorate from Boston University and began his Civil Rights legacy. From a historical perspective.... President Andrew Johnson's actions affected this nation for almost 100 years between 1865 and 1964 when president Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the next year, signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 as part of his push for “The Great Society” programs of the 60’s. He was influenced by Dr. Martin Luther King and the turmoil of the Civil Rights Movement at the time, but he was also influenced by “The New Deal” programs presented by Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) as a means to help the U.S. recover from the Great Depression of the 30’s, which was influenced by the Fall of the Stock Market in 1929. Lyndon Johnson was also a non-elected president after the assignation of John F. Kennedy (JFK), but unlike Andrew Johnson, LBJ tried to continue the legacy of John F. Kennedy instead of undermining it, as Andrew Johnson did Lincoln’s legacy. Andrew Johnson’s actions after the Civil War is one of the primary reasons why Blacks still seek equality in society today.
As for Trump's legacy and the damage he may have created for our future, it’s still too early for us to determine today. No doubt it will have negative and lasting repercussions. But what we DO know today is that Andrew Johnson's legacy was devastating, and history clearly indicates this today as he is remembered as one of the worst presidents in history. Trump may be on the brink of starting a war and ruining the economy and back tracking civil rights. BUT Johnson seriously contributed to preventing Blacks from becoming full and equal citizens, establishing wealth, pursuing education, owning businesses and property, and having voting rights, and defied Lincolns intentions for reconstruction. He didn't start a war, but he made sure Blacks were not viewed as equals, under the law, and in many respects, these archaic and unjustifiable beliefs still remain among far too many in society to this day. This contributes to higher unemployment rates, discrimination, poorer health options, higher arrest rates, and many other social ills and inequalities.
Though I do not support the current president, we tend to make judgments of those who existed within our own lifespan or within our own memory of time, instead of from a historical standpoint. This is difficult to do if you don’t examine history and the sociological ramifications that occur because of specific but monumental events in history. It was at this time that one of the people in this conversation referred to what they called a “wave” or trend, that apparently others in the conversation also gravitated towards. The assumption many of them had was that we are now in a trend, or wave of labeling each new president as “the worst president that we’ve ever had”, and that Trump is just the latest in this wave of judgments. I disagree, and my reasons will be explained as this article continues.
There are always detractors who criticize the party that they oppose as well as the president that represents that party. This is a normal reaction of a portion of the opposing party, but not the reaction of all, or even most of the opposing party as most people eventually accept the outcome of these elections whether they like the outcome or not, because it usually doesn't lead to major changes in their lives. This is NOT the case with president Trump at all. What HAS happened since 2000 and the election of George W. Bush may seem to follow this so called "trend" but that can be explained historically as well.
BEFORE GEORGE W. BUSH
Before George W. Bush, we had Bill Clinton....who was not labeled as the worst president or incompetent by either party, though he was labeled as promiscuous. He was also experienced and considered to be charming by most people. His politics were slightly leftist not extremely as he was hard on crime, which led to today’s status of mass incarceration in the U.S. by his own admittance, and by former Ohio State Law professor Michelle Alexander, who wrote the popular book on this subject, "The New Jim Crow". Clinton was impeached by Congress for the Lewinsky case, but was not convicted by the Senate, and retained his office. He was the 2nd person ever to be impeached. Andrew Johnson, the president I mentioned above, was the first president in history to be impeached in 1868 for the offenses I mention above. But he was not convicted either.
Before Clinton there was George H.W. Bush, (politically right wing) who was not considered to be the brightest, but was not labeled the worst either. He was politically experienced, (Vice President, Congressman, CIA director, Ambassador, WWII war hero), but not as personable as his predecessor Reagan, and he was generally considered to be out of touch with the American public, but was not labeled the worst, or incompetent, though he did lead us into the Gulf War, which was primarily about middle east relations and oil. By the way, Oil was H.W.s business in Texas before he focuses on politics, and we were entering another oil energy crisis similar to the one we had in the 70's.
Before H.W. we had Ronald Reagan, (politically right wing) an extremely popular but flawed president. He was governor of California and the person who labeled civil rights activist, and then UCLA professor Angela Davis as the FBI's number one target because of her affiliation with members of the Black Panther Party. Dr. Davis was arrested and eventually exonerated and went on to teach at UC Santa Cruz. Reagan started the concept of "Trickle Down Economics" that didn't and has never worked, though almost every republican president keeps trying it. This is when the middle class began to shrink significantly and continually.
Reagan also recommended the "Star Wars" defense, which was viewed as absurd even by his supporters. But, he was not a tyrant, and he was well liked, though marginalized populations were not and have never been his fan because he didn't address their needs. He did try to keep Russia on a short leash though as he was part of the reason for the collapse of the Soviet Union...a small part. It was already on its way to collapsing before he was in office.

Jimmy Carter (left wing) was in office before this...and he was well liked but not as politically effective because he didn't play by traditional rules and ended up alienating politicians, even if the public seemed to like him. The energy crisis hit us when he was in office, and the Iran hostage situation (at the U.S. embassy in Tehran) under the Ayatollah Khomeini took place during this time between 1979 and the election of Reagan when they were released.
Next comes Gerald Ford (right wing), who was called clumsy, and was not popular because he was never elected, and he pardoned Nixon. But he helped us to accept the outcome of Watergate. He "took the hit" so to speak.
Then we come to Richard Nixon (right wing) who probably was NOT the worst president we've ever had either. He's just the one we trusted the least, and the one people label as the worst because of issues of power and trust. But, he was very experienced politically (Vice president, congressman, senator). He helped develop a relationship with China that we still benefit from today, but he was defensive and paranoid and created the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) in 1973 to address what he called "The War on Drugs" because of Vietnam vets who often were on drugs as a coping mechanism for P.T.S.D. (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) because of the war, and to create a means of control for arresting marginalized communities based on drug convictions instead of what it really was; based on race.
Until Trump, Nixon was often labeled as the worst president, but not because he didn't have skills or experience. It was because he betrayed the Constitution and American citizens and was caught doing it. He would've been impeached AND CONVICTED if he had not resigned.
AFTER GEORGE W. BUSH
George W. Bush (right wing) was in a close race with former V.P. Al Gore, who might have won if he had not distanced himself from Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky debacle. George Bush became popular after 9-11, but his search for Osama Bin Laden lead to a series of misinformation, which lead to the false search for weapons of mass destruction...an agenda pushed by ultra conservative and V.P. Dick Cheney who was also in his father's cabinet, as well as Reagan's and Ford's.
It is assumed by many political experts that Colin Powell served with him out of respect, but only served one term because of issues with Cheney, and the poor assessment regarding weapons of mass destruction. 9-11 and George W's reaction to it, along with the demise of our economy, led to the Recession of 2008 and poor relations in the middle east. This is not the same as the issues Nixon faced, but the public reaction was just as bad because of high unemployment, the dying auto industry, sky high gas prices, poor housing market, and strained international relations. George W. is also responsible for the development of Homeland Security in 2002 because of 9-11. With the support of George W. and V.P. Dick Cheney, Homeland Security authorized electronic surveillance techniques that were intended to find terrorists before they strike, but also violated certain Constitutional policies and practices that American citizens had regarding their privacy.
This is also what led to the actions of EDWARD SNOWDEN and his exposure of government surveillance tactics used against American citizens.
After George Bush's presidency, Barack Obama (left wing) won a close race over Arizona senator, war hero and republican John McCain, after winning the democratic nomination over Hillary Clinton. Because of the recession and the reputation of George W. by 2008, America seemed ready for a change and got it in Obama as the first Black president in U.S. history, but he was not perfect either. He did get us out of the recession, he improved foreign relations, especially in the middle east. He helped save the banking and auto industry, improved college debt repayment (I can attest to this personally), improve legislation for the LGBTQ community and rights for women, he pushed for alternative energy options (wind and solar instead of fossil fuels), and utilized military special ops teams to find and kill Osama Bin Laden, the architect of the devastation of 9-11.
But he also supported the continuance of electronic surveillance efforts on American citizens that started under George Bush, and supported by Dick Cheney, in their efforts to thwart terrorism by "bending" the U.S. Constitution and the rights of all American citizens. Obama also utilized drone strikes more than any president in history. This saved a lot of U.S. soldiers, but it also led to higher death rates and the killing of innocent civilians.
After his first year in office and the elections of 2010, Obama faced an obstructionist GOP congress led by Mitch McConnell, then speaker of the house John Boehner and later, Paul Ryan, current speaker of the house. Obama was sometimes called the worst president in history, but the facts have never supported this as he has already been labeled at one of the top 15 presidents in history by most reputable polls, if not higher.
Most of those who labeled him as the worst expressed this not based on his failings, but most because of what he represented, opposition to the growing rich and conservative Tea Party, opposition to those who don't support Gay Marriage, opposition to Militarized police forces that kill Blacks in high percentages compared to other races, and for simply being a successful president of color in a nation full of people who have difficulty accepting this eventual but radical social changes towards in racial and social progress. These changes are norms in every major nation except for Europe, a continent of predominantly White citizens, and the United States, a nation established by European immigrants on a land full of Native Americans.
Even as I write this article, I entered the term "worst president in history" in a Google image search, and more than half of the images were of Barack Obama, despite the historical fact that this is simply not true! This has nothing to do with his political record, it has EVERYTHING to do with racial issues that his presidency has uncovered that have existed for centuries while a nation exercises their collective denial of these incongruencies. Andrew Johnson is part of the reason for the racial tensions we still have that divide us as a nation today. Though I will not expand on it hear, Cognitive Dissonance also plays a significant role in the establishment of this nation, as well as the SOME of the negative judgments of the imperfect, but very successful Barack H. Obama.

THEN WE COME TO DONALD J. TRUMP
For brevity...I'm simply going to try and list the issues that have occurred within the past year so far. I won't expand on them, or discuss them in detail, I'll just list them.
Trump has no political experience whatsoever and poor business experience despite his billions, he has filed bankruptcy 6 times, expresses no interest in learning, seems to ignore or lack interest in the truth, or facts, has a record of sexual predatory behavior, insults veterans, the disabled, gold star families, the nation and country of Mexico, as well as women, immigrants, Blacks, Muslims, the media, (fake accusations regarding "fake news"), wants to build a wall that might never be made, and will never work, wants to create travel bans that banned countries that generally have not committed acts of terrorism, and he wants to undue any and all legislation that has Obama's name on it regardless of the repercussions on American citizens.
Trump wants to change the tax code to benefit the rich and corporations instead of the middle class, wants to appoint a slew of inexperienced business persons to cabinet positions that they don't qualify for (Rick Perry, Ben Carson, and Betsy DeVos are at the top of a very long list), he wants to appoint judges to key positions despite their lack of experience (some never having tried a case at all), he lies with unprecedented regularity, has absolutely no humility, vilifies anyone he dislikes for personal reasons or because they aren't loyal to him personally, has rallies just to inflate his ego and public image, doesn't read national security briefings, insults his generals who's job is to provide him with advice concerning national security, he doesn't address issues of White Supremacy, the Neo-Nazi movement or Alt Right movement, Breitbart, and the KKK, he bans the use of certain terms like Transsexual, and Diversity from reports written by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), and he removed diversity initiatives from government websites.
Trump continues to attack Obama and Hillary Clinton, started the birther movement, has sanctioned military actions that have gotten soldiers killed unnecessarily, according to military experts, has disabled Obamacare because he's unable to replace it, refused to reveal his taxes but passed a ridiculously unfair tax reform bill, attacks NFL players, especially Colin Kaepernick, for exercising their Constitutional Rights for peaceful protest, he had to close Trump University because of legal issues, accused women in the media of face-lifts and having their menstrual cycle, berated John McCain because he was captured in Vietnam, accused Ted Cruz’s father of being part of a conspiracy to kill JFK, has no idea what the Nuclear Triad is, sees no issue with using nuclear weapons because he has no idea how devastating they are in both the short and long run, and he talks about family values and is on his 3rd marriage, which may not be the most stable of marriages.
Trump criticized Obama for taking vacations (which were not considered to be excessive according to records), but Trump has taken more time off (especially for Golf) than any president in history...which he said he would not do, he also said he would eliminate ISIS within months...which has not taken place (and almost no one believed he would anyway), he accused a Latino judge of being unfair because he's Latino, he recommended his supporters become violent towards his naysayers at his campaign rallies (quote "punch him in the face"), he pulls the U.S out of the International Paris Accords with other nations concerning climate change (which is a scientific fact), he claims that he promotes Christianity and yet, according to some sources, has never behaved in accordance with traditional Christian values, and he falsely accused Obama of planting surveillance "bugs" in the Whitehouse.
Trump has been baiting an already volatile and violent North Korean leader who is testing nuclear weapons that he may use against us because of Trump's arrogance, he failed to provide appropriate support to Puerto Rico, he fired FBI director Comey without justification, half of the people he appointed in his cabinet have been fired or resigned...IN LESS THAN A YEAR, he has the lowest 1st year approval ratings of any president in history, and there are ties between members of his cabinet and Russian collusion that may ultimately lead to Trump himself.
Donald Trump appears to be the worst president in MODERN history after only 1 year because of all the above, and much more. But even Andrew Johnson's reputation was not labeled as such until put into perspective over time. Trump has not been around long enough to have repercussions that have lasting affects for a century, whereas Andrew Johnson's legacy has already done this. to thee detriment of a nation.
Trump has established his reputation in LESS THAN A YEAR....and I’ve used historical facts and occurrences to support my claims. I do not expect everyone to agree. In fact, I expect some disagreement and rebuttal will take place in reaction to this post.
I’m no political expert, but I’m more than happy to engage in peaceful and productive dialogue about this topic with anyone willing to do so. This is how we learn, and this is how we better understand not just the issues, but each other as well.
I don’t care if we disagree…. That’s is our right, (Freedom of Speech) and is a part of the individuality that I have always embraced.
What I do care about is if we can learn from each other and understand one another better than we did yesterday. This, in my humble opinion, is the key to our humanity and our progress as a human race.
Peace and Blessings....
