Fueling Tomorrow’s Leaders Through STEM
National STEM/STEAM Day is celebrated on November 8 every year, to encourage kids to explore their interests in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEM). STEM workers play an important role society: our engineers, medical scientists, sociologists, and informational security analysts, among others.
UGI Utilities, Inc. ’s long-standing support of public education focuses on early childhood literacy, career awareness and STEM-related programs. UGI regularly provides opportunities for employees to volunteer at STEM-related activities, in addition to providing more than $1 million each year to help fund STEM-focused organizations and programs.
The Science Projects are Really Kids’ Stuff (S.P.A.R.K.S.) Science Explorers Program is one of the more popular UGI-sponsored STEM programs that employees volunteer for each year. The Science Explorers Program provides opportunities for children ages 4-11 to become engaged in the wonders of science.
UGI volunteers are instrumental in helping bring science explorers to classrooms throughout our service territory. Employees assist students as they conduct fun experiments, including mixing two liquids to make a solid, making glowing slime, and even launching a rocket.
“STEM education provides critical skill-building opportunities for children,” said Brooke Smith, Community Relations Manager. “Kids can see, touch, and feel the world around them and experience how things work. They can fail, try again, and succeed, all while learning critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It is so gratifying to support STEM programming as a volunteer and witness the light bulb moments for children. Partners like S.P.A.R.K.S. assist in ensuring equitable STEM learning opportunities are available for all children by taking these lessons to students in underserved communities. In our industry, we will rely on competent STEM professionals to step into future jobs at UGI. By investing in STEM programs for youth, we are inspiring future professionals to provide innovative ideas that will further UGI’s efforts to create renewable and sustainable energy solutions.”
Other #STEM-related programs UGI supported over the past year include:
Wilkes University – Women Empowered By Science (WEBS) Camp: This innovative science summer camp offers young women the opportunity to investigate the many areas of science through hands-on laboratories and activities.

Junior Achievement of SouthCentral PA - STEM Summit: STEM Summit is a day-long program designed for 9th or 10th grade students, held at a local high school. This program includes nine 30-minute sessions with science experiments, technology, engineering, math competitions, and trades modules.
Lancaster Science Factory: UGI’s EITC donation supports the STEM Summer Camps, one of which was facilitated by UGI engineers, to create a hands-on outreach program entitled “The Journey of Natural Gas.” The group offered several stations to children focused on mapping/pipeline distribution, safe digging/811, regulation, metering, and temperature.
Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA (GSHPA) - STEM Programming: With the help of STEM program sponsors, GSHPA provides STEM learning as a component of high-quality after-school programming for girls, which curtails the learning gap in STEM they are likely to experience as they progress in their education.
Da Vinci Discovery Center of Science and Technology: UGI supports the Science on the Move program and Women in Science Engineering (WISE) Forum, which inspires female students to expand their career aspirations and exposes high school and college students to strong role models who have pursued leadership opportunities in different STEM industries
SkillsUSA Council: UGI funding benefits five local career and technical high schools by promoting mastery of 21st century career skills, training students in effective communication, professional decorum, financial literacy, and collaborative teamwork.
