Genuine Compliments: The Untapped Tool for Becoming Successful in Leadership, Business and Life.

Hi LinkedIn!

Welcome back to Your 6% Journey, a weekly newsletter with thought provoking insights on how to get among the 6% of people who want change, pledge to change things in their business and life, and actually follow through. Everything that I share in this newsletter is based on over ten years of rigorous research and fieldwork. I am so glad to share it here with you so that you can accelerate your success in business and life, or in other words- join the 6%.

If you’re meeting me for the first time, it’s so great to see you here! You can learn more about me and everything that I do by clicking here.

This newsletter is about a simple tool that is so accessible, and yet not used enough- the power of genuine compliments—a simple yet profound tool for building relationships, engagement and motivation. It goes a long way when it comes to engagement, it goes a long way when it comes to retention, and yet every time I ask a group of leaders at one of my keynotes- give me an example of a genuine compliment you gave someone in your team this past week for a job well done, I get a room full of people scratching their heads trying to come up with an example for me.

Here's how powerful genuine compliments are, and here is how they work in the human brain. Imagine if I told you, "Hey, I've got a bunch of cash, a bunch of 100-dollar bills to give out. If you come say hi to me, I'll give you a stack of bills." I bet you'd come say hi, wouldn't you?

Now, here's an intriguing fact: Every time you give someone a genuine compliment, it triggers the same area in their brain as receiving cash. Yes, you heard that right! Genuine praise activates the brain's reward center, eliciting feelings of joy and appreciation akin to receiving a monetary reward.

Think about it: Every day, you have the opportunity to start your day with the equivalent of a stack of hundreds simply by giving out genuine compliments. And the best part? Since compliments are free, there's no depletion in your checking account.

In a world where negativity often overshadows positivity, genuine compliments serve as a beacon of light. Yet, surprisingly, many of us struggle to recall instances where we've genuinely praised others. It's easy to slip into a pattern of criticism or neglecting to acknowledge the strengths and efforts of those around us.

A genuine compliment goes beyond superficial observations about appearance or possessions. It speaks to someone's character, abilities, or contributions—recognizing their essence and the value they bring to the table.

When you take the time to offer sincere praise, you're not only brightening someone else's day but also deepening your connection with them. It demonstrates empathy, kindness, and an appreciation for their unique qualities and efforts.

Furthermore, the act of giving genuine compliments has a profound impact on your own mental well-being. It activates mirror neurons in your brain, triggering a positive feedback loop of happiness and empathy. By uplifting others, you're also uplifting yourself, fostering a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.

So, let's embrace the "100 Bill Effect" and make genuine compliments a cornerstone of our interactions. Be the person who spreads positivity and recognition wherever you go. Not only will you become a magnet for goodwill and connection, but you'll also contribute to a more compassionate and uplifting community.

As you navigate the complexities of life, remember the power you hold to make a difference—one genuine compliment at a time.

In my research, I have discovered that only 6% of people who set goals, actually follow through. If you make it your goal to give more genuine compliments to the people in your life, it’s time to make that goal stick. Stay tuned for more insights and practical tips on achieving your goals and becoming a six percenter. Stay focused, stay motivated, get granular with your goals.
