Give yourself a break

It’s usually not a good idea to tell someone at work, you’re stupid, or ask what’s wrong with you.

And yet, so many people say those things to themself. I’m sure I have once or twice.

Why would we say things to ourselves that we would NEVER say to someone else?

Why would we not offer the same courtesy and respect we give others, to ourselves?

Why are we so tough on ourselves?

It’s because most people’s brains are wired to the negative.

A loss stings more and lasts longer than a win. It also makes a more permanent impact. And gets repeated on an endless negative loop.

The good news is that we can break that loop. Today it’s popularly called, self-care or self-love. We can rewire the negative thoughts in the brain that keeps beating us up for the mistakes of the past.

It’s just a couple of small tricks that gets the goodness in motion.

  1. Pay attention. See if you can catch yourself when you’re hurling insults inward, then turn them around. For example; I’m so dumb for losing that account becomes, that was a mistake and now I’ll try something different.
  2. Positive self-talk. Develop a little script for yourself talking about past successes and how you always learn, grow and move forward. These can come from your Success Journal. Don’t have a Success Journal? It’s a good day to start one. Repeat your successes out loud, silently, or from a self-recording, daily. I’ve also used mine right before a big presentation or meeting, to close a deal.

So, here’s your Action Item and Mission, should you decide to accept it: simply try these two ideas for a few weeks and see the difference. Give it a little time to work. You’re probably reprogramming years of abuse.

The brain, like a new computer, runs the programs loaded into it.

Program yours for self-respect, confidence, and success.

You deserve as much respect and success as anyone else in your organization. With these two tips, you’ll be more positive, more pleasant to be around, and your business and personal life will improve. A total win.

Why not help someone else who could use a break and share this post? Remember, one hand washes the other and together they get clean. Thank you for watching. Have a really rewarding week. And I’ll see you next time.
